Job Summary
The Veterinary Technician I in the Small Animal Internal Medicine (SAIM)
Service will provide skilled technical and paramedical support and
nursing care for patients under general direction of faculty clinicians
and higher-level technicians. Specialized knowledge of endoscopy
equipment and related ancillary equipment is required. In addition, the
individual in this position will provide oversight, instruction and
stocking of the Purina kitchen and will participate in training to
develop expertise in small animal nutrition in support of this role. Due
to the teaching nature of the hospital, this position will supervise and
instruct professional students and veterinary technician students in
diagnostic and therapeutic techniques. The Veterinary Technician 1 may
be asked to assist in other areas of the hospital.
Duties & Responsibilities
– Provide oversight, teaching and stocking of the Purina kitchen
facility
– Provide technical support needed for patient care and teaching
activities in SAIM
o Assist the students and staff with scheduling of appointments,
record keeping and charge entry.
o Patient care including, restraint, collection and submission of
samples, administration of medications, and in conducting diagnostic
tests indicated by the veterinarian.
o Assist in establishing efficient work flow for outpatient
services.
o Assist in hospitalizing patients for diagnostic work-up and
medical treatment.
o Prepare for and assist in, special medical procedures such as;
endoscopy, bone marrow biopsies, joint taps.
o Maintain medical records and enter charges for medical services
rendered which requires a good working knowledge of the health
information system.
– Provide technical support needed for service activities in SAIM
o Maintain in-house consultation records, endoscopy/video log books,
and financial records pertaining to the section; as well as,
material used for teaching purposes.
o Ensure assigned work areas are appropriately stocked, cleaned and
equipment is in working order.
o Order replacement or new equipment and supplies as directed by the
service head.
o Properly clean, sterilize, and maintain pertinent advanced
diagnostic equipment.
o Coordinate the scheduling of procedures between VTH services
o Answer questions from potential clients, referring veterinarians
and VTH staff concerning treatments or diagnostic work-ups that are
available
o Order, stock and run in house tests and ship referral lab tests
for the Small Animal Hospital
o Provide instruction and evaluation of veterinary technician
students.
– Assist members of SAIM in individual teaching and research efforts,
as directed by the service head
o Assists in teaching laboratories by selecting and setting out
equipment needed and assisting directly in teaching technical skills
to veterinary students.
o Assists in training of residents in proper use and maintenance of
medical equipment.
– Other duties as required
Additional Physical Demands
An environment of stress may be anticipated. The person in this position
must be capable of reliably functioning in such an area. The amount of
physical exertion will vary with assignments. For example, the assistant
may be lifting a 40lb. dog on and off an examination table. The handling
of any animal presents some element of risk or injury. Some strength and
considerable caution are required when working with animals during
diagnostic or surgical procedures. To some degree, unp easantness may be
experienced under such conditions. This position entails operating
equipment, administering medications, and restraining animals of various
species for examination. Exposure to anesthetic agents may present a
potential hazard. An ability to work in the presence of animal waste and
fluids, syringes, needles, and medications are potentially dangerous and
must be used with care. Persons allergic to animal dander, dust, pollen,
hay, etc., may experience discomfort in this position
Minimum Qualifications
1.Successful completion of a veterinary technology program accredited by
the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
2. Current certification as a Veterinary Technician by the Illinois
Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).
3. One (1) year (12 months) of paramedical veterinary experience
comparable to that performed at the Veterinary Technician (General)
level of this series or in other positions of comparable responsibility.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Illinois Veterinary Technician Certification must be maintained
throughout employment.
Familiar with federal regulations and university and hospital polices
regarding the use and handling of controlled substances.
Skill in the operation of surgical, laboratory and diagnostic equipment.
Able to adapt to new technologies, procedures and equipment.
Demonstrate adherence to strict protocols.
Able to instruct veterinary medi
