Pet Food Express is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Associate Human Resources Business Partner to join our Oakley, CA Distribution Center to provide on-site HR expertise and support. Reporting to the HR Manager, the HRBP plays a crucial role in supporting the alignment of HR initiatives with the Distribution Center’s goals. This hands-on position acts as a trusted advisor to the DC leadership team, identifying HR needs, providing expertise, and implementing HR strategies in various areas such as employee relations, recruiting, and performance management within the DC. The HR Business Partner will also be responsible for the completion of day-to-day HR tasks in the DC such as maintenance of employee personnel records, new hire onboarding and terminations, and benefits enrollment.
This is an on-site, a high-volume position with many interactions with staff. The ideal candidate is looking to take the next step in their Human Resources career and own multiple HR functions. Please Note: This position is an on-site position at our Distribution Center in Oakley, CA. Candidates who are remote or outside of reasonable commuting distance will not be considered at this time.
What you’ll do:
Strategic HR Partnership:
Collaborate closely with the DC leadership to understand business objectives, identify HR needs, and develop and implement HR strategies that support PFE goals.
Build constructive relationships with critical stakeholders to share information and influence change.
Represent HR at DC leadership meetings and ensure supervisors are up to date on HR initiatives, policies, procedures and events.
Employee Relations and Performance Management:
Serve as a primary point of contact for DC employees, addressing inquiries, resolving concerns, and fostering a positive work environment.
Ensure compliance with employment laws, company policies, and labor regulations.
Conduct timely internal investigations, prepare documentation, and make recommendations, including disciplinary actions.
Provide detailed case management documentation clearly written and with recommended outcomes.
Coach managers through the DAN process, ensuring timely completion.
Conduct exit interviews and champion employee pulse surveys.
Coordinate and ensure completion of performance evaluation forms and courses in LMS.
Talent Acquisition and Onboarding:
Full-cycle recruiting of DC roles as assigned – including posting, sourcing, screening, and interviewing; Actively build a talent pipeline of candidates to fill current and future roles.
Partner with DC management and Recruiting to ensure a consistent process, equitable hiring practices, and anticipate staffing needs.
Prepare employee roster reconciliation report.
Own completion and tracking of new hire onboarding documents and onboarding of new hires including I-9 verification and HRIS set up.
Back up for ID badge issuing, safety shoe orders, and safety vests and locker set up.
Payroll and Benefits:
Coordinate Money Network kits for new hires and checks for final payment along with termination paperwork.
Ensure payroll change documents are completed and submitted in a timely manner, ensuring managers are following processes and procedures.
Maintain tracking of offboarding of temp staff in HRIS.
Track and ensure timely completion of new hire benefit enrollment, open enrollment and life events enrollments.
Workers Comp, LOA, and Compliance:
Provide employees with information and documents to request LOA/Accommodations and ensure completion.
Ensure supervisors and employees follow Employee Injury Steps, providing injured employees an Employee Packet, and maintain copies of accident reports.
Ensure employees submit work status reports after occupational clinic visits.
Inform employees on the accommodation process and partner with HR for completion.
Ensure annual postings for Labor Laws and Workers Comp are up to date.
Other HR duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
3-5 years of progressive leadership experience in Human Resources positions, preferred, preferably within a distribution center or retail environment.
Bachelors degree in Human Resources, Business, Organization Development or a related field.
Professional HR certification is a plus.
Experience with cross-functional and multi-functional project team(s) as a member and/or lead.
Sound knowledge of HR best practices, employment laws, and labor regulations.
Highly effective written, verbal, public presentation /communication skills and strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships at all levels of the organization.
Demonstrated ability to influence and partner effectively with business leaders to drive HR initiatives and achieve results
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Strong discernment, including problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and self-initiative

The salary range for this position is expected to be $70,000/yr – 80,000/yr. Pet Food Express determines starting salary based on many factors, including but not limited to, local market rate, the qualified pool of candidates, internal compensation practices, a candidate’s actual skills and experience.
