2025 R&D Summer Coating Innovation Intern

This position is a comprehensive 12-week learning experience in Performance Coatings Group R&D. Students will be assigned to a specific lab and will be given a mentor. Interns will also be given a Technical Project in which they will present at the end of their assignment. Students will be active participants on a project team and will have periodic reviews to evaluate their performance. Students will participate in a number of special networking and learning events throughout their assignment. This opportunity will allow students to gain experience in work groups, as well as working with other Interns and Co-ops.
The individual selected for this role will primarily work at 4440 Warrensville Center Rd, Warrensville Heights, OH 44128.
All hires must go through a background check before the start of employment.
Support proof of concept projects, evaluate new materials, technologies, and methods coming from emerging technology sources, supplier innovations, internal polymer development, and raw material risk reduction opportunities for PCG divisions.
Interact with team members and stakeholders. Conduct proof of concept projects based on business needs.
Create clear summaries of all learnings and recommendations. Support a smooth transfer/training of proof of concept work into division projects where fit and feasibility has been demonstrated.
Provide support to technicians, chemists and scientists within assigned Research & Development Group.
Perform a variety of laboratory tasks utilizing general instruments and advanced lab equipment.
Collaborate with other research and development team members to complete required tasks, including process chemistry and engineering and material science research groups.
Complete appropriate research documentation, calculations, and data analysis and effectively communicate these results with supervisor and team members.
Prepare basic samples, materials, equipment, and other required tools for laboratory tests or development.
Perform basic technical development, tests, analyses, and research based on formulas and project requirements.
Complete appropriate forms and documentation regarding research and development processes, tasks, results, reports and conclusions; receives direction from other technicians or chemists on specialized or complex issues.
Perform basic calculations to prepare, perform, and conclude tests and analyses.
Clean, maintain and calibrate standard equipment and maintain a clean and safe working environment.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Must be currently enrolled in a Bachelors Degree program in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (“STEM”) at the time of the internship program
Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age
Must be legally authorized to work in the country of employment without needing sponsorship for employment work visa status now or in the future
Must be willing to work up to 40 hours per week for a total of 12 week, with or without reasonable accommodation
Minimum of 2.8 GPA
Must have one semester of Chemistry lab experience
Understand coating chemistry and structure-property relationships of chemicals/polymers
Preferred Qualifications
Industrial R&D experience in chemicals or coatings
Knowledge of analytical and materials science tools
DFSS and DOE
Major in Organic chemistry, Polymer chemistry, Material Science, or a related field
