WGL – Manager Safety

Washington Gas had an immediate opening for a Safety Manager who will be responsible for driving workplace safety across all operations at the Company. The person in this role will drive the importance of coaching and mentoring workers & safety team members along with fostering a culture of continuous learning and safety excellence.

You Will:

Develop, Mentor, and Lead: Cultivate a high-performing safety team through data-driven coaching, mentoring, and leadership based on stakeholder feedback and safety performance assessments.

Safety Management Systems: Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Safety Management Systems, procedures, and standards across the organization.

Performance Goals: Establish, track, and communicate safety performance goals. Develop and implement plans to achieve these goals, ensuring alignment with corporate safety objectives.

Safety Culture: Drive the adoption of Human Performance principles and behaviors that foster a positive, proactive safety culture.

Incident Investigation and Root Cause Analysis: Manage the incident and injury investigation process for all incidents and near misses, conducting root cause analyses using structured techniques, and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Serious Incidents and Fatalities (SIFs) Prevention: Introduce and lead initiatives aimed at reducing the occurrence of SIFs, ensuring these are communicated effectively across the workforce for continuous learning.

Life Saving Rules Integration: Integrate Life Saving Rules into all safety-related activities, ensuring they are a core component of the company’s safety practices.

Hazard Evaluation and Risk Mitigation: Conduct hazard evaluations and exposure assessments before and during project, construction, and maintenance activities. Provide expert recommendations to mitigate identified risks. Reinforce the Management of Change process.

Regulatory Compliance: Ensure corporate compliance with OSHA, DOT, PHMSA and other relevant safety regulations. Collaborate with Health and Medical personnel to enhance injury management procedures and Care Management.

Communication and Reporting: Prepare and present assessment reports, incident reports, training materials, and safety performance statistics. Ensure these communications are technically accurate and foster a culture of transparency and continuous improvement.

Stakeholder Collaboration: Build and maintain strong working partnerships with business stakeholders, customizing and implementing safety solutions that reduce risk and improve safety outcomes.

Coaching and Mentoring: Provide ongoing coaching and mentoring to workforce and safety team members, fostering professional development, and ensuring the team is equipped to manage safety programs effectively.

You Must Have:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, science, or a related field preferred.

Experience: Minimum 10 years of experience in operational, manufacturing, or construction safety required, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role leading, mentoring, and developing team members. Oil and Gas experience preferred.

Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of safety management principles, techniques, and federal/state safety regulations. Experience with Root Cause Analysis and incident investigation of higher-level incidents is essential.

Leadership and Communication: Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and to train others.

Certifications: Safety certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) are preferred.

Travel: Ability to travel to various field sites and locations as required.

We offer a competitive salary range of $121,500 to $167,250 per year, commensurate with experience, education, and skills. In addition, we provide a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
