Job Summary

The Production Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the end-stage
production processes of approximately 100 new Press books per year in a
variety of print and digital formats, including scheduling, tracking,
and electronic preparation of POD and epub files for outside vendors and
aggregators. The Specialist is also responsible for reprints, both
conventional and on-demand, from the Press backlist, conversion of
hardcover backlist books to new paperbacks, acquired reprints from other
publishers, and imports from foreign publishers. The Specialist also
acts as liaison for print and electronic needs of other departments at
the University of Illinois Press. About University Press The University

Duties & Responsibilities

– 1. Coordinate printing and manufacturing of all new titles in
conjunction with the Production Manager. Troubleshoot electronic
file issues, route proofs, monitor print/bind schedules with vendors
to ensure that components and books are delivered on time to meet
scheduled delivery dates. Coordinate with customer service reps to
ensure efficient processing of multiple titles in production with
vendor. Coordinate with vendor customer service reps and online
printer systems to mitigate late shipments and manufacturing issues.
Make recommendations for specific issues of concern with Production
Manager.
– 2. Manage all production functions of approximately 100 new and
selected backlist Print On-Demand titles per year, including
evaluating and uploading updated/corrected files to vendors;
approving various proofs; performing quality checks; tracking
schedules; addressing quality issues as they arise with vendors;
tracking special orders. Maintain documentation systems for titles
included in print-on-demand programs and ensure accuracy of title
lists.
– 3. Manage all production aspects of epubs for approximately 100
titles per year and review for quality control. Manage production
of, prepare, and provide PDFs and epubs of selected text and covers
to ware housing vendor for distribution to online retailers. Train
other press personnel on PDF preparation for other electronic
aggregators and vendors; monitor for quality control.
– 4. Manage all production aspects for reprints, including updating
specifications and soliciting requests for estimates. Manage the
reprint corrections process, documenting file and data systems with
details of corrections made at second and subsequent printings;
update POD, ePub, OA, and print files.
– 5. Assess bids and obtain purchase orders from the Presss
business office as appropriate for reprints, and miscellaneous jobs
from other departments.
– 6. Using PitStop Pro, Acrobat, and InDesign software, run
pre-flight checks on text and cover files for new book titles and
journals before sending jobs to the printer. Confer with production
and design personnel in performing pre-flight checks; monitor for
quality control.
– 7. Manage electronic storage, retrieval, and archiving of Press
files in multiple formats.
– 8. Foster innovation and cross-dep rtmental collaboration at the
Press. Contribute to Press-wide initiatives. 5%
– 9. Assist Production Manager with other duties as assigned. 5%

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelors degree. 2. A total of one (1) year (12 months) in
education, training, and/or work experience in the area of Adobe suite
of platforms and other related programs. (examples: In Design,
PhotoShop) 3. Based on position requirements, additional education,
training, and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent
to the position may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Education

1.B.A./B.S.; minimum 5 years publishing experience and demonstrated
proficiency in use of page-layout programs on both Macintosh and PC
platforms.

Preferred Experience

1. Excellent organizational skills and database tracking experience.

2. Knowledge of the rules of typographical style and the specifics of
page makeup.

3. Knowledge of standard proofreader marks.

4. Knowledge of design standards such as InDesign (including scripting
and style sheets), Illustrator, Microsoft Word, Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat
Pro, and Excel.

developments and issues.
