The Missons, Concepts and Capabilities (MCC) division of Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is looking for a Structural Engineer . This position provides operational, research and development, and training support along with subject matter expert advice and decision support to the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) as part of its 24/7/365 Technical Reachback Support program. Technical Reachback’s primary function is responding to Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and (high yield) Explosive (CBRNE) requests for information (RFIs) from the Combatant Commands (CCMDs), Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), Joint Staff (JS), Intelligence Community (IC), command elements, Department of Homeland Security (DHS), other U.S. Government agencies, and first responders.

The ideal candidate will apply subject matter expertise and problem-solving skills to develop, integrate, test, verify, validate, and apply CBRNE software/scenarios based on experiments and predicted phenomena using theoretical and computational methods. The right candidate will work closely with other engineering groups to define the modeling objectives, obtaining the necessary model inputs and outputs, and verifying/validating results. The position also requires presenting modeling results and decision support aid to internal and external customers in written reports and oral presentations. Reviewing the technical work of other engineers performing modeling projects is required.

The candidate would also be responsible for the following:

Reviewing current research in various and potentially diverse subject areas for familiarity and relevance

Becoming familiar with new experiments and resulting data that are relevant to the project and evaluating the overall quality of the presented results

Providing general knowledge and structural engineering-related subject matter expertise to government agencies and first responders

Assisting in the development of program plans, timelines, and technical documents

Attending technical and programmatic meetings in which you coordinate responses from scientific community members and review the assembled materials for technical accuracy, consistency, and completeness.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Structural/Civil Engineering or a related field with 5-7 years experience

Candidate should be able and willing to work rotating shifts

Must be a US Citizen

Hands on experience using computer-based software to develop structurally sound and comprehensive models that account for all structural components

Experience working with organizations within the Department of Defense as well as other government agencies

Must have an active SECRET or higher clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain a TS with SCI eligibility

Desired Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Structural/Civil Engineering or a related field with 3-5 years experience

Experience in Combating WMD threats or CBRN threats (primarily through modeling and simulation and/or test experience)

A working knowledge of using ArcGIS tools in an operational environment

Knowledge of blast effects on structures

A current Professional Engineering (PE) license
