Sr. Mechanical Engineer

Amentum

Amentum is seeking a Mechanical Engineer at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD), Dahlgren, VA.

The successful candidate will apply robust mechanical engineering processes in a “hands-on” environment, working closely with the customer and end-users to develop hardware associated with a tactical weapon control system. This position will interface with other engineering functional areas (i.e., electrical engineering, system engineering, software development, system test, configuration management, and safety) and technical personnel from various external organizations to clarify program intent, identify problems, suggest changes, and develop and document final solutions.

As part of the development lifecycle process, this position will participate in the installation, integration, and testing of the developed hardware both at NSWCDD and on occasion at other DoD locations working very closely with stakeholders, customers, flight personnel, and end users.

Mechanical Engineer Responsibilities Includes:

Leading the design and development of electronics enclosures for DOD programs, ensuring compliance with military specifications (MIL-STD) for environmental protection (e.g., MIL-STD-810), EMI/RFI shielding (e.g., MIL-STD-461), and physical protection (e.g., MIL-STD-1344).

Performing thermal and structural analysis of enclosures using finite element analysis (FEA) or other engineering tools.

Selecting and specifying materials for enclosures based on performance requirements, weight limitations, and manufacturability.

Developing detailed engineering drawings and specifications for enclosures using CAD software and in accordance with ASME Y14.5 2018 and ASME Y14.41.

Collaborating with BMS electrical engineers to ensure proper thermal management and electromagnetic compatibility within the enclosure.

Working with manufacturing partners to ensure enclosures are produced to meet design specifications and quality standards.

Performing or oversee qualification testing of enclosures to verify compliance with military standards.

Preparing and maintaining technical documentation for enclosures, including design reports, test reports, and manufacturing drawings.

Supporting and mentoring fellow engineers on the team.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science (BS) degree from an accredited college or university in an engineering, scientific, or technical discipline.

Eight (8) years professional technical experience including at least six (6) years specialized experience in the areas of either weapons manned or unmanned, robotic, or weapon control system concept definition, design, integration, and engineering. Specialized experience shall also include experience as a mechanical engineer performing mechanical engineering analysis and design, mechanical engineering software tools, coordinating mechanical fabrication, and mechanical engineering test techniques.

Must have an Active SECRET US Government Clearance. Note: US Citizenship is required to obtain a SECRET Clearance.

Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks) and FEA/CFD (Solidworks Simulation, Flow, Nastran, Altair, LS-Dyna, ANSYS, etc.) in order to structurally and thermally substantiate design.

Experience using manufacturing equipment to produce rapid prototypes; 3D printers, Laser Cutters, Waterjet, Milling Machines, Hand Tools, etc.

Proficiency in working with hardware engineering best practices and rapid development processes.
