Overview

Responsibilities
1. Functions within the scope of practice of a Paramedic as defined within Iowa state regulations. This position does take a patient assignment but must be overseen and cosigned by an RN.
2. Provides patient care and performs patient care procedures:
a. EKG
b. Accu checks
c. CPR
d. Crutches
e. Ace bandage application
f. Splint application
g.Wound cleansing
h. Dressing
i. Immobilization
j. Medication administration under medical/nursing direction (IM, IV, oral ASA and Tylenol, oral analgesics) (not to include high risk medication including titratable medications)
k. IV insertions, IO insertion and EJ insertions
l. Foley catheterization
m. Intubation (only at the direct request and supervision by an ED physician who is present in the room).
n. Re-assessment of patient condition and status.
o. Documentation on the EMR (vital signs, assessments, medications, etc.)
p. Independent transportation to inpatient units
q. Oxygen administration
r. Cardiac monitoring and rhythm interpretation
s. Spinal stabilization and immobilization
t. Extrication of patients
3. Responds to code and trauma activations in the ED and, when requested, on the hospital campus and assisted with delegation from the primary RN.
4. Provides patient transportation within the Emergency Department and on the hospital campus as requested.
5. Will not perform triage, initial patient assessment, provide dismissal instructions, administer antibiotics or Thrombolytics and other high-risk medications as determined by facility policy.
6. Consults as needed with supervising nurses and ED physicians regarding patient condition and treatment.
7. Maintains strict patient confidentiality.
Qualifications
Required:
Valid certificate to function as a EMT-P, EMT-Paramedic) in the State of Iowa
ACLS or ACLS instructor certification is required within 6 months. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include the following: American Heart Association: Advanced Cardiac Life Support, American Safety and Health Institute: ACLS, American College of Surgeons: ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) and American College of Emergency Physician: ACLS
PALS (Pediatric Cardiac Life Support) or PALS instructor certification required within 6 months. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include the following: American Heart Association: Pediatric Advanced Life Support, American Safety and Health Institute: PALS, American Academy of Pediatrics: Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP), and American Academy of Pediatrics/American College of Emergency Physicians: APLS.
Pay Range
$18.74 – $25.77 /hour
