Summary The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR). OFMR provides the full range of building services and support services throughout the Smithsonian campus. Responsibilities The Materials Handler Supervisor serves as a working First Line Supervisor within the Metro Support Branch, exercising supervisory responsibility over subordinate employees and the work operations. In this position, you will: Review and approve routine work assignments by the material handler leader. In collaboration with the Facility Manager, plan and supervise the day-to-day warehouse operations, shipping and receiving office, ensure schedules and priorities are met, oversee work in progress, and make adjustments due to changing circumstances. Maintain employee motivation and morale. Oversee the management of the Shipping/Receiving Office, ensuring performance of duties. Act as selection official in hiring process following EEO policies and make recommendations on performance awards, levels of competence and promotions. Conditions of Employment Must have a valid State or District of Columbia drivers license. (You must submit a copy) Must be available to work late shifts, weekends and holidays and is subject to being called in for emergencies to restore the Smithsonian Institution to normal operations. Call back and emergency overtime are regular requirements of this position. May require occasional travel. Physical Requirements: Physical exertion is considerable and includes prolong standing, climbing up and down ladders and scaffolding, working in a cramped and awkward position, reaching, lifting and bending when using hand and power tools. Performance of duty requires walking, bending, stooping, climbing, lifting up to 70 lbs., carrying, pushing, pulling, overhead reaching, standing for extended periods of time, etc. Qualification requirements, including one year time-in-grade at the next lower grade level for promotion candidates, must be met within 30 days of the job announcement closing date. Qualifications In order to be rated qualified, an applicants overall experience and training must indicate possession of the minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the duties of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education Additional Information This position is not included in the bargaining unit.
