The City of Norfolks Department of General Services Animal Care Center is seeking a Project Coordinator to be responsible for all aspects of the dog, cat, and small animal foster program. This includes recruiting and onboarding of new foster volunteers, serving as the liaison for medical and behavioral support, maintaining foster supply inventory, and responding to after-hours emergencies on an on-call basis.

The Project Coordinator responds to program/project inquiries. Develops and implements program goals and objectives. May develop and monitor the budget. May supervise employees.

Essential Functions

Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:

Manage foster care program

Recruitment, onboarding and training for foster families

Maintain inventory of all foster supplies and materials

Identify animals in need of foster

Liaison for all foster medical and behavior questions

Assist with administering vaccines and treatments for foster animals

Provide foster support and guidance, to include responding after hours “on call” for emergencies

Work directly with Shelter Veterinarian and Medical Coordinator to determine appropriate medical care for animals in foster

Assist with foster animal euthanasia decision making and euthanasia procedure.

Regularly post social media content for foster recruitment

Education/Experience

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelors degree or equivalent. Veterinary Technology, Veterinary Science, Animal Care or a closely related field is preferred.

Required:

Three (3) years of experience in a field related to the program/project; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Information & Requirements

Valid Drivers License required.

Certification in animal euthanasia or ability to be certified within one year of employment is required.

Working Hours:

Hours are scheduled Sunday through Saturday, 40 hours per week. Hours require flexibility to include working nights, holidays and weekends.

This is an Essential position; incumbent will be required to report to work during inclement weather when the City is closed.

Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus for new hires.

Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

Retirement

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
