Nature of Work
This is responsible technical work inspecting and regulating facilities under the industrial pretreatment Program. Inspectors assist in training and provide guidance to coworkers. The work is performed under the lead of the Industrial Pretreatment Program Officer and under the supervision of the Industrial Pretreatment Program Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description. 

Conducts inspections of industrial facilities; assures adequate controls are in place; reviews reports and analyses of samples to determine compliance status and adequacy of reports.
Collects samples of wastewater discharges from industrial facilities; analyzes sample results; monitors water quality of river and sewage system.
Reviews and evaluates non-domestic sewer use surveys; conducts inspections to determine permit requirements.
Conducts investigations of public complaints received.
Participates in developing and implementing an industrial pretreatment program.
Enforces industrial pretreatment program laws and standards; maintains water sampling equipment.
Responds to emergency situations; takes actions as required.
Maintains records and prepares reports.
Prepares and issues discharge permits and discharge authorization for industries; reviews applicable regulations for proper classification of industries
Conducts billing related to the industrial pretreatment program.
Keeps abreast of state and federal publications and regulations regarding water pollution and of other publications regarding equipment and techniques.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Training and Experience
Required Education and Experience

Associates degree in environmental science, physical science or closely related field
–AND–
Two (2) years experience in a municipal wastewater treatment facility
–OR–
An equivalent combination of training, work experience and supplemental educational courses directly related to industrial/commercial pretreatment processes, pretreatment inspections or wastewater treatment systems that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the established duties.
Required Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Michigan drivers license
State of Michigan municipal wastewater operators license is highly desirable
