PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

Primary responsibility includes interpreting for student(s) with hearing impairments as required in student’s Individualized Education Plans.

QUALIFICATIONS:

(Skills, Knowledge, Abilities, Education, Certification/Licensure, Experience, Equipment)

High school graduate or equivalent;

Fluency in sign language (SLPI Intermediate or Intermediate Plus)

Knowledge of correct English usage; conceptually accurate signed English

Ability to relate to students with disabilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Interpret all information presented in learning situations in and outside of the classroom.

Provide positive, clear sign language model during activities.

Assist in the supervision of students in the classroom and other areas of the school.

Perform personal care duties for students with disabilities.

Supervise students transitioning throughout the classroom, building, and throughout the school day.

Provide designated student(s) instructional services including physical, behavioral, and academic assistance and reteaching according to the IEP and under the direction of certified staff.

Prepare and organize instructional materials and equipment.

Confer, plan, and work collaboratively with classroom teachers, special education teachers, teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing and others in order to ensure assigned students receive appropriate services.

Maintain confidentiality by discussing assignments only with district and AEA staff who have a legitimate need to know.

Attend IEP meetings when requested by administration.

Seek professional development opportunities and maintain a continuing program of staff development.

Serve as a liaison to promote good public relations between students in the program, hearing peers, staff, and faculty members.

Collect data and maintain records for students as directed by the special ed teacher or DHH teacher. Assist in the evaluation of the effectiveness of instructional methods.

Displays a high level of initiative, effort, and attention to detail and commitment by completing assignments efficiently with minimal supervision.

Attend all in-service and staff meetings as directed.

Follow building associate work hours.

Report concerns to appropriate school personnel.

Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.

Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION OF OTHERS:

None

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Repetitious bending, lifting, stooping, kneeling, hand movement and lifting.

Drug, tobacco, and alcohol free while working.

Must be able to see and hear within normal limits with or without corrective lenses or hearing aids.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle used to travel between sites.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Majority of work is performed in an office or school setting.

Some field trips and off campus supervision.

Occasional exposure to body fluids, fumes, noise, and hazardous materials.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Per Board Policies and administrative guidelines.

9 to 12 month position

Performance evaluated annually
