Automotive Mechanic – The work involves responsibility for the skilled maintenance and repair of a wide variety of motor equipment and other public works equipment. This class is distinguished from Automotive Mechanic Helper by the ability to perform repairs at the journey-level. The work is performed under the general direction of a higher level employee with leeway allowed
for planning the details of each assignment. May lead the work of Automotive Mechanic Helpers. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Performs skilled operations in the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of gasoline and/or diesel powered motor equipment including Trucks, lawn mowers, snow plowing equipment and buses;
Grinds valves and fits new bearings, pistons and rings;
Installs connecting rods and bearings;
Repairs and/or overhauls brake systems, front and rear axles,
differentials and transmissions; Conducts electrical diagnosis and repair of suspension systems,
steering systems, hydraulic systems and electrical systems; Operates machine shop equipment such as lathes, grinders, electronic test equipment, etc.
May perform motor vehicle inspections.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of standard automotive repair methods, terminology and
tools of the trade;
Working knowledge of the machinist trade;
Skill in the use and care of automotive and public works equipment
servicing tools and equipment;
Ability to make difficult repairs to automotive and other mechanical
equipment;
Ability to work from plans, specifications, and rough sketches and
oral instructions;
Ability to lay out work;
Ability to lift heavy objects;
Ability to perform activities involving considerable strenuous
effort;
Ability to adhere to safety precautions when using potentially
harmful equipment, tools and machines;
Willingness to respond to emergencies and work overtime;
Willingness to work outside in adverse weather conditions;
Good coordination;
Dexterity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State
registered college, university or technical school with an
Associates Degree or certificate in gasoline and/or diesel
motor equipment repair technology or a closely related field; OR
Two (2) years of experience in gasoline and diesel motor
equipment repair under the supervision or direction of a skilled
motor equipment mechanic; OR
Any equivalent combination of training and experience as defined
by the limits of A) and B).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AT TIME OF APPOINTMENT:
Possession of the appropriate level Motor Vehicle Operators
License.
NOTE: When required by employer, the incumbent must furnish his/her
own hand tools and toolbox.
