Certified Surgical First Assist

Under the direct and immediate supervision of a surgeon, theSurgical First Assistant provides aid in exposure, hemostasis and othertechnical functions that will help the surgeon carry out a safe operation withoptimal results for the patient. Thesurgical first assistant plays a vital role in patient care and assistingsurgeons preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Positions the patient with the surgeon’s instruction, whichwill give the best exposure for the surgical procedure
Uses standard and specialized equipment to aid in patientpositioning
Provides the surgeon with appropriate visualization of theoperative site using retractors, sponges, dial manipulation, and othertechniques according to standards
Utilizes appropriate techniques to assist the surgeon withtemporary or permanent hemostasis
Utilizes appropriate techniques to assist with closure ofbody planes
Selects appropriate actions or instrumentation incollaboration with the surgeon
Selects and applies appropriate wound dressings
Assist with patient transport to and from OR
Performs other duties as assigned/necessary
Minimum Requirements:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Graduation from accredited surgical assistant program withsubsequent current certification/credential
Complies with all relevant professional standards ofpractice
Participation and completion of Amergis Competency programwhen applicable
Current CPR if applicable
TB questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable
Current Health certificate (per contract or stateregulation)
Must meet all federal, state and local requirements
Successful completion of new hire training as applicable tojob site
Understand patient confidentiality and HIPAArequirements
Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to andfrom appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors,co-workers, clients) via strong communication skills; proficiency in theEnglish language may be required
Computer proficiency required
Must be at least 18 years of age
