Program Information
The School of Biomedical Sciences and Health Care Administration offers programs in Biomedical Sciences and Health Care Administration. The Biomedical Sciences programs focus on the detection, diagnosis and treatment of diseases across all systems and parts of the human body through laboratory-based testing and diagnostic imaging.
Job Summary
This Research Specialist position will work within the research laboratory focusing on assessing antimicrobial resistance from bacterial populations coming from the clinic and various environments.
The majority of time for this position will be spent in experimental design and performing microbiology lab techniques associated with funded research projects with input from the principal investigator (Pl). The project will start off with more frequent communication with the Pl in the beginning and should evolve to the Research Specialist becoming more independent. The major techniques performed will include filtering various water samples to determine overall prevalence of resistance from different bacterial populations and using aseptic techniques to further isolate bacteria for subsequent antimicrobial susceptibility testing and molecular analysis to identify mechanisms associated with resistance phenotypes. Although not a requirement for the position, experience in bioinformatics using Python, R or comparable programming language would be preferable. The Research Specialist will be responsible for primary quality control on all isolation and resistance characterization and will train both undergraduate and graduate students on the above techniques.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in science field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Proficiency in Microsoft office apps, particularly Microsoft excel skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in biomedical science, biological sciences or other related field.
Previous laboratory research experience.
Previous laboratory research experience in microbiology.
Previous experience with Python performing bioinformatics
Target Salary Range Up to $50,000. Final salary offers contingent upon skills, knowledge, and abilities as they relate to the position.
