Job Description:
Duties/Responsibilities
Design, fabricate, and fit prosthetics and & orthotics, provide follow-up under the supervision of Certified Prosthetists and Orthotists.
Gain exposure to and demonstrate competency with a wide variety of orthotic and prosthetic systems, as required by the National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education, over either a 2-year or 18-month combined O & P Residency
Interface with Scottish Rite for Children health team members (Certified (and TX State Licensed) Prosthetists, Orthotists, Physicians, Therapists, Nurses, etc.) in developing patient specific O & P treatment objectives by utilizing sound patient evaluation techniques including, but not limited to, the following (as required); patient history, motor function and strength, range of joint motion, skin condition, sensory evaluation, gait analysis, and, in general, a patients developmental age and psychosocial status as it may pertain to his/her prosthetic care
Care for and come in contact with infants, toddlers, preschool, school-age, and adolescent patients, with concomitant dealings with adult caretakers
Develop the most appropriate O & P methodology to meet a patient-specific objectives
Take negative impressions, scans and proper measurements
Modify positive plaster molds or 3D images
Fabricate orthoses and prostheses (plaster, plastic, and metal work) as required, and communicate all necessary measurements and material selection necessary for technical staff fabrication
Fit prostheses and orthoses and evaluate their efficacy in meeting both the established objectives and patient tolerance
Provide follow-up assessments regarding appropriateness of O & P devices, function and fit
Adhere to pre-determined limitations of patient services as deemed appropriate, contingent with job experience
Document all patient care with co-signature of Supervising TDLR Licensed and ABC Certified Prosthetist (CP, LP), Orthotist (CO, LO) or CPO, LPO, using OPIE and Epic appropriately
Consult with and train O & P Resident(s) and UTSMC Students
Required Skills/Abilities
Masters degree (MPO) in Orthotics and Prosthetics required
Eligibility for certification in Prosthetics by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Pedorthics (ABC) required
Must be registered to practice as a Student Prosthetist/Orthotist in the state of Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR)
Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to manage a constant influx of activity
