Job Title Campus Recreation Coordinator (Aquatics & Safety)

General Job Description

This is a professional position responsible for administering comprehensive aquatics and safety programming functions within the Campus Recreation Department. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Associate Director of Campus Recreation.

Essential Job Functions

1. Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates graduate and undergraduate student employees.

2. Coordinates comprehensive campus recreation aquatic and safety programming functions, to include marketing and coordinating the scheduling and management of outdoor and indoor pool facilities use; coordinating a departmental comprehensive emergency action plan; and collaborating with staff to ensure safety training is provided during departmental and area-specific training.

3. Plans, develops, promotes, implements, and evaluates events and programs related to the area of responsibility, including aquatics programming such as learn to swim classes, stroke clinics, and pool and safety programming such as red shirt drills, safety newsletters, safety quizzes, and CPR , first aid, AED , and bloodborne pathogens classes.

4. Develops, implements, and monitors effectiveness of aquatics and safety initiatives.

5. Administers aquatics program and safety program budget and payroll functions.

6. Maintains program equipment.

7. Educates faculty and staff, students, and the general public about the area of responsibility and related programs provided by the department.

8. Researches and applies new knowledge and techniques to current policies, procedures, and operations.

9. Promotes program and operational retention and effectiveness through ongoing assessment, intervention, evaluation, and participant feedback.

10. Serves as liaison to faculty and staff, student organizations, external organizations and/or vendors, and the community.

Non-Essential Job Functions

1. Serves on departmental and university committees.

2. Coordinates and/or assists with special events and activities as necessary.

3. Works outside normal office hours and weekends as required.

4. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

1. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies and procedures.

2. Knowledge of professional standards and regulations.

3. Skill in using computer applications including spreadsheet, database, and word processing software.

4. Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate programs.

5. Ability to exercise sound judgment in making decisions.

6. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

7. Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships and work as part of a team.

8. Ability to set priorities and complete assignments on time.

9. Ability to train and supervise others.

10. Ability to obtain CPR , First Aid, AED , and American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certifications within three months of employment.

11. Ability to obtain Pool Operator ( CPO ) or Aquatic Facility Operator ( AFO ) certification within six months of employment.

12. Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

13. Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties.

Physical Demands

Required Education

Bachelor’s degree in recreation management, sports management, kinesiology, or a related field is required.

Required Experience and Training

One year of aquatic experience is required. CPR , First Aid, AED , and American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certifications are required within three months of employment. Pool Operator ( CPO ) or Aquatic Facility Operator ( AFO ) certification is required within six months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree is preferred. Experience in aquatics and/or safety programming in a collegiate setting is preferred. Supervisory experience is preferred. CPO or AFO Instructor, Lifeguard Instructor Trainer ( LGIT ), and Water Safety Instructor Trainer ( WSIT ) certifications are preferred.

This position is eligible for participation in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ) retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
