Scope of Job

To provide highly skilled technical performance and supervision of all procedures in Nuclear Medicine and Positron Emission Tomography ( PET ) studies.

Description of Duties

Provides imaging services for patient care, prepares and administers radioactive drugs and or contrast media to patients. Provides technical skills and support to physicians or others who diagnose, care for, and treat patients and to researchers who investigate the uses of radioactive drugs in the operation of nuclear medicine equipment for diagnostic and evaluation purposes.

Performs patient care activities within the professional scope of practice including but not limited to Point of Care Testing, IV insertion, patient interview/assessment/discharge/ phone education and confirmation, patient transportation, preparation and administration of contrast agents, and pharmaceuticals/radiopharmaceuticals, etc.

Maintains in-depth knowledge of all routine section-specific protocols/procedures and the proficient operation of all assigned Nuclear Medicine/ PET & hot lab equipment/procedures including quality assurance activities. Able to perform specialized procedures with limited assistance.

Demonstrates skills required to complete clinical competencies to provide high-quality exams and can function independently without direct supervision.

Ensures that patient studies are reviewed for accuracy, coded, and charged appropriately.

Communicates professionally, effectively, and promptly with all patient care providers, patients, guests, and multidisciplinary care teams.

Demonstrates the ability to address and handle patient care concerns and notifies the radiologist if and when gross pathological findings are discovered.

Practices responsible use of communication tools (status board, paging systems, telephones, email, fax, etc.).

Follows as low as reasonably achievable ( ALARA ) safety guidelines.

Ensures imaging studies are appropriately imaged and error rates are minimized to appropriate established levels.

Accurately enters data into systems (i.e., PACS , equipment systems, electronic medical records and other computer systems) and maintains up-to-date knowledge of billing, coding, national coverage decisions, ICD9/10, etc.

Performs CT Procedures as needed.

Adheres to Joint Commission standards, and initiatives and to applicable state/federal licensure requirements and guidelines and American College of Radiology Accreditation standards and recommendations.

Administers contrast agents and utilizes sterile or aseptic techniques where applicable. Reviews medications and allergies. Follows the five rights of drug administration.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education

Graduate of an accredited program of study in Nuclear Medicine Technology.

Preferred Education

Licenses/Certifications

Nuclear Medicine Technologist, ARRT (N) certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists ( ARRT )-OR-Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist ( CNMT ) by the Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board ( NMTCB ). Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist ( MRT ) by Texas Medical Board. Basic Life Support ( BLS ) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation ( CPR ) certification.

As condition of employment this position requires the applicant to be authorized to operate a University-Owned Vehicle for Official University Business. Per University of Texas System Policy 157, applicants will be subject to a motor vehicle record check for their most recent thirty-six (36) month history. Out of State Drivers are required to submit a 36-month history MVR from their prior State of residence(s).

Required Experience

One (1) year clinical experience.

Preferred Experience

Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Equipment

Use of standard office and medical imaging equipment.

Working Conditions

Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/Clinic/Research Environment; some travel, weekend work, and irregular shifts may be required. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Exposure to all common diseases and/or blood borne pathogens. Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous or radioactive materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
