Position Description
TheSchool of Music (https://www.music.txst.edu/) at Texas State University seeks an engaging, creative, collaborative, and dedicated teacher/director to serve as a tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor of Opera. Duties begin August 2025.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
Direct TXST Opera Theater and produce a minimum of one staged production each semester.
Teach courses on opera production, opera workshop, and opera theater, and other courses according to the candidate’s qualifications and needs of the School of Music.
Maintain a record of scholarly/creative activity and make substantive professional contributions to the field of opera.
Participate in faculty meetings, committees, and service activities.
Other duties assigned by the Director of the School of Music.
Position is subject to availability of funds.
Required Qualifications
Assistant Professor:
Doctorate in opera directing or related field (must be completed by August 16, 2025) or equivalent professional experience.
Evidence of excellence in teaching opera at the professional or collegiate level.
A record of achievement in scholarly/creative activity and demonstrated potential for further professional growth.
Evidence of success in student recruitment.
Experience working with individuals from varied backgrounds.
Associate Professor:
In addition to required qualifications for the Assistant Professor rank:
Minimum six years of full-time university teaching.
A record of teaching, scholarly/creative activities, and service commensurate of tenure at Texas State University
A sustained record of achievement in scholarly/creative activity resulting in national recognition and stature.
To be eligible for hire at the Associate Professor rank, candidate must meet the requirements for that rank as established by the School of Music. The successful applicant will receive the appropriate rank and title based on established university and school standards.
Preferred Qualifications
University teaching experience.
National/international stature as a professional opera director.
Experience and demonstrated success in developing resources to support an opera program.
Demonstrated communication and organizational skills, and an ability to work collaboratively.
