Job Summary
We are looking for a Veterinary Technician (Levels I, II, III) to join our Insourcing Solutions team located in Poolesville, MD. (See qualifications for each level)
What you will do!
In the Veterinary Technician I, II, and III role, you will assist will all activities required for supporting and maintaining the site animal colonies and Animal Study Protocols in support of the research program. Care for and maintain lab animals in accordance with all guidelines, policies, and regulations to ensure their health and welfare.
You will perform the following duties:
Prepare and distribute animal diets, enrichment, and clinical treatments; collect and record physiological data (pulse, respiration, heart rate, body temperature, etc.).
Perform technical procedures including femoral blood collection, IV catheterization, aseptic tissue collection and processing, anesthesia, food or liquid consumption, drug dosage calculation and administration (Topical, PO, IM, SQ, IV and ID), TB testing, weighing, physical examinations, restraint and handling of animals, radiographs, and other technical procedures as needed.
Understand basic animal behavior for training techniques; including positive reinforcement and cognitive testing; assist in on-going behavioral testing and data collection.
Assist veterinarian or investigators with surgeries or specialized procedures.
Perform animal health surveillance checks and report any abnormal findings.
Maintain electronic medical records, update treatment plans, send daily emails regarding clinical and experimental information vet staff and client.
Collect, preserve, and prepare blood, urine, stool, and tissue samples.
Participate in study related necropsies and tissue harvest.
Perform weekly mid-day health checks and daily pm health checks of all animals in the colony (including geriatric rhesus monkeys).
Daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning and sanitization of prep areas and procedure rooms. Set-up procedure areas and prepare supplies and equipment for procedures.
Ability to maintain freezer organization and sample inventory.
Participate in all required training (topics may include animal specific information and technical procedures, medical care, OSHA, regulatory, ASP support, and standard operating procedures).
Job Qualifications
The following are minimum requirements related to the Veterinary Technician I, II, and III position.
Education: All levels – a high school diploma or GED is required; a BS degree in Animal Science, Biology, or similar discipline, or A.A. in Veterinary Technology is preferred
Experience: Level I – 2-3 years experience working with animals in biomedical research, of which 1 year must be with non-human primates. Veterinary Hospital technical experience will be considered.
Level II-III a minimum of 5 years experience of same. Supervisory experience preferred for Level III.
Certification: Level I- Eligibility to take the AALAS certification at the LAT level required. Level II-III LATG eligibility required.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education/experience listed above for these levels.
The pay range for this position is $27.00 to $33.00 USD per hour . Please note the range covers level I-III, salary will depend on level, in addition to factors such as experience, skills, and certification.
