Role & Responsibilities:
Serves as Operator of Record for Class water & class 1 wastewater treatment facilities, acts as lead worker & coordinates activities of treatment plant operators in operation & maintenance of water & wastewater treatment plants (e.g., monitors plant maintenance operation, assigns work duties, schedules chemical laboratory tests, develops & recommends work schedules of lower level operators, oversees plant record keeping & ensures compliance with Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) water & wastewater regulations): consisting of bar screens, lift stations, primary & secondary settlings, activated sludge, chlorination, recirculation filters, sludge digestion, high service plumbing, & other devices (e.g. calculates & adjusts chlorine feed rate; cleans sand filters; checks air-water ratio in hydro pneumatic tanks; monitors & adjusts collection system, chlorination process, trash traps, dosing pumps & tertiary sand filters; transfers sludge; cleans diffusers & screens; adds chemicals; changes chlorine tanks; reads flow meters).
Conducts routine sampling & monitoring daily or as required by Ohio EPA: performs daily, weekly, bi-weekly & monthly chemical tests on water & sewage plants (e.g., alkalinity, pH, temperature, chlorine, dissolved oxygen, settable solids, turbidity): uses test kits &/or meters on samples from plants to determine levels of treatment & quality; collects samples & sends to a laboratory for analysis; maintains laboratory & laboratory equipment; orders supplies & equipment.
Manages water & sewage plant equipment (e.g., lubricates all moving parts, changes packing, removes & replaces worn parts): repairs & installs water & sewage lines, blowers, chlorinator pumps, diffusers, meters, automatic controls, compressors, motors, water & chemical feed pumps, electrical control panels, pressure valves and pressure tanks; makes necessary adjustments; checks valves, piping & belts; orders supplies & equipment; makes repairs as required; receives instruction from the Division of Engineering & coordinates with their representative on plant operation & improvements; maintains Class 1 wastewater license and Class 2 water license.
Maintains treatment plant records: prepares, maintains & forwards daily & monthly records to regulatory agencies (e.g., Environmental Protection Agency, National Pollution Discharge Elimination systems permits, drinking water reports, sludge management reports); prepares & maintains records & reports (e.g., takes readings of meters & electrical timers, records figures on log by test category, collects information, compiles on appropriate forms, files records, disburses reports); assists with overseeing budget allocation for section (e.g., tracks & records spending, stays within budget allocation, projects needed expenditures, orders & buys within set timeframes, develops & submits future budget requests).
Oversees safety inspection program of treatment facilities: performs safety inspections (e.g., checks chlorinators for leaks, monitors safety hazards, checks for required safety equipment): inform park personnel of safety hazards & policies (e.g., material safety data sheets, chemical hazards & spill prevention, EPA & health dept. requirements); trains & updates personnel (e.g., explain emergency procedures, disburses safety hazard alerts).
