Job Summary

Virologist II opportunity on-site in West Jefferson, OH . Performs advanced biological experiments, research and analysis. Solves complex problems; taking a new perspective using existing solutions. Less hands-on work, more providing guidance. Serves as study director. Conducts quality control review, data reporting, work flow assessments and writes/reviews technical correspondence and technical documents.

Conducts research and testing on basic and applied principles of microbial, plant, human, and animal life, including: origin, anatomy, and function of biological systems in both simple and complex settings. Collects and studies biological data to focus on structure, function, behavior, and tailored application. Completes technical evaluations and/or assessments of biologics, biological mechanisms, or biological properties. May specialize in:

Virology (Influenza):

Perform research and analysis of data to include assessment of in vitro susceptibility and in vivo efficacy studies of novel small molecule and biological antiviral candidates.

Interact with clients to develop new capabilities and assist in the development of novel antiviral candidates.

Identify problems and develop recommendations for process improvements.

Extract information from existing databases or literature and performs reviews

Expertise in cell based assays

Able to analyze and interpret data and trouble-shoot with limited supervision.

Possess a though knowledge of experimental design and underlying scientific principles

Experience with animal models of infection with seasonal and HPAI influenza

Experience with HAI and MN assays

Responsibilities

Performs moderately complex assignments by compiling and evaluating test data and planning test experiments, including: determination of test procedures, limits, and instrumentation.

Analyzes test data and results to determine acceptability or application of test item/system or validity of test data.

Analyzes and interprets data collected. Prepares technical reports and makes internal presentations. May assist in external client presentations, both formal and informal.

Troubleshoots testing processes when expected results are not obtained.

May assist lower level staff in resolving analysis problems.

May assist in conducting small technical projects or phases of technical projects.

May provide direction to and coordinate the efforts of technical support staff in the performance of assigned projects within time and budget constraints.

Assists with proposal efforts. May prepare technical sections of proposals.

Builds relationships with internal and external clients and presents research results.

Communicates with client regarding the schedule and quality of deliverables.

Contributes to IR&D studies. Develops innovative testing and/or analysis methods to improve the quality of results and/or the efficiency of the process.

Supports business development efforts led by others.

May assist with the coordination of and participation in Battelle-sponsored conferences or client meetings.

May participate in scientific conferences, peer review panels, and increases company visibility through publications.

Oversees, mentors and trains lower-level staff.

Key Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related field (Virology) with 2 years of experience or master’s degree or PhD in related field with experience; or an equivalent combination of education and or experience in a related field.

Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance (U.S. citizenship required).

Preferred Qualifications

Prior exp with animal work influenza and with assays.

Understanding and experience working with animal model development.
