Patient Transporter – Full-Time – Shadyside

UPMC Shadyside is hiring full-time Transporters to help support the day-to-day operations of the Transportation Services Department located in Shadyside, PA. The days and shifts for these positions will vary.

The Transporters will be responsible for safely and efficiently transporting patients and equipment to and from nursing units and other departments throughout the hospital in accordance with established policies and procedures. In this fast-paced position, you will be walking approximately seven miles a day while interacting with patients and contributing to their quality of care.

Responsibilities

Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Acquire electrocardiograms in a manner compatible with the electrocardiographic management system for the nursing units. Recognizes and resolves computer error messages generated by the electrocardiographic carts. Assists other departments/units and satellite areas in this regard as well.

Adjust equipment and controls according to the physicians orders to establish protocol.

Attach electrodes to the patients chest, arms, and legs, connect electrodes to leads from the electrocardiogram (EKG) machine and operate the EKG machine to obtain a reading.

Delivers supplies, equipment, medication, and other materials to the patient units, and other designated areas in a safe, timely, and accurate manner. Ensures that a handoff of medication occurs with the nurse.

Interact with electrocardiographic management, Clinicpac, and Medipac systems via terminal to cancel/complete patient charges as appropriate, verify and/or correct patient demographic information and retrieve EKGs for staff members as requested.

Keep the patient physically and emotionally relaxed during the recording of the electrocardiogram. Conduct all patient relationships in a courteous, tactful, and professional manner.

Maintain a positive attitude characterized by caring, concern and support for patients, visitors, medical staff, and coworkers. Demonstrate, on a consistent basis, the behaviors which comprise The Basics of Service Excellence.

Prioritize the scheduling of several STAT electrocardiograms when requested proximately. If appropriate, the employee should discuss the condition/situation of the patients with the unit staff in determining the prioritization of the STAT requests.

Safely transfer patients in and out of hospital beds.

Transport patients, adjunct equipment, supplies, specimens, and morgue patients via prescribed vehicles between the patient units, treatment centers, and other designated areas in a safe, timely, and accurate manner.

Knowledge of lab terminology and CRT terminals is helpful.

Must be able to rotate shifts that provide 24-hour/day, seven days per week coverage.

Knowledge of office systems and procedures.

Ability to accurately identify anatomical landmarks for the correct placement of the electrocardiographic leads.

Ability to accurately follow departmental procedures.

Basic knowledge of the operation and maintenance of the electrocardiographic management system required.

Ability to exercise good judgment in the prioritization of work.

Effective organization skills.

May in the course of their duties be in rooms where medications are stored or may transport medications when they transport patients.

Transportation of medication is limited from one department to another.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

CPR is required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
