Summary:
Assists the professional technical staff and senior technicians in research, development, testing and manufacture of coatings and proprietary pigments. Gathers data, prepares specimens, and maintains accurate records for QA/QC purposes and maintains a secret clearance and all training and requirements to support that clearance.
Responsibilities:
1. Assists the professional technical staff and senior technicians in research, design, development, testing and manufacturing processes which includes, but is not limited to, the following:
a. Programs, operates, maintains, calibrate, and repairs a variety of standard production equipment and machinery.
b. Conducts a variety of tests using established methods.
c. Prepares tests specimens and performs sample preparation.
d. Extracts and compiles data and presents the data in prescribed form.
2. Orders, as needed, necessary materials or supplies.
3. Maintains accurate records per production and quality standards.
4. Accesses the safe for storage of classified paperwork.
5. Completes and stays current with all training requirements.
6. Performs additional responsibilities as appropriate or as requested.
Physical and Mental Demands:
1. Regularly or frequently talking, hearing, touching, grasping, standing, walking, reaching with hands/arms and performing repetitive wrist, hand and/or finger movement.
2. Light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force.
3. Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less, three-dimensional vision, ability to identify and distinguish colors, and ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus to review test results, perform testing of CSTRS, install strain gage, view PC screen, read technical manuals, calibration of machines and equipment, adjust equipment, use measuring devices, microscopes, etc.
4. Concentrated attention to precisely weigh samples and chemicals, run tests and make adjustments while in progress, calibrate equipment, write reports, operate analytical equipment, etc.
5. Apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral diagrammatic, or schedule form.
6. Intermediate to advanced math skills to deal with mathematical relationships, algebra, geometry, and shop math (i.e. fractions, percentages, proportions, slide rule, etc.).
7. Intermediate reading and writing skills.
Work Environment:
1. This position is safety sensitive.
2. Moderate noise level.
3. Frequently works near fumes or airborne particles, with toxic or caustic chemicals or near moving mechanical parts.
Minimum Qualifications and Skills:
1. High school diploma plus some additional technical related coursework preferred.
2. Considerable related technical work experience.
3. Skill in using a variety of standard tools and laboratory equipment.
