Network Engineer II – Service Desk Team

The Network Engineer II is primarily responsible for working on a team at the Red River Service Desk at our HQ location in Chantilly, VA. This position will handle technical support requests directly from customers as well as escalation from other team members and field engineers. Our engineers are responsible for maintaining user uptime and improving their experiences through effective maintenance, problem identification and resolution activities, as well as growing and developing the organization’s reputation with existing customers through exceptional customer service. Candidates must be energetic and focused with a strong motivation to learn new technologies and management/maintenance processes. This position requires dedication, persistence, effective utilization of provided resources, and the ability to deliver superior customer service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Handle tickets submitted by users and customer points of contact

Monitor and respond to alerts on network equipment such as firewalls, routers, switches, WLAN Controllers, WAPs, and FMCs

Support and troubleshoot firewalls, routers, switches, wireless, and other components of LAN and WAN networks from a wide variety of vendors

Maintain and upgrade/update network infrastructure

Maintain network performance through network monitoring and analysis, performance tuning, troubleshooting network problems, and escalating issues to vendors

Promote network security by maintaining proper network access control, evaluating security policies/rules, and maintaining documentation

Ensure network device firmware and Cisco IOS images including FMC, FTD, ASA, WLC, routers, and switches are up to date for all customers, performing upgrades when necessary

Work with monitoring tools, logs, and management portals to investigate issues with network traffic and performance

Collaborate and communicate with other team members to provide excellent service and ticket resolution

Act as a mentor to junior Red River engineers

Respond to escalation calls as part of the after hours on-call rotation (approximately one week every two months)

Minimum Experience:

3 years of network engineering experience, including:

Basic understanding of routing protocols

Basic understanding wireless LAN technologies

Basic understanding of various WAN connectivity designs (Metro-E, MPLS, P2P, SD-WAN)

Intermediate understanding of multi-vendor firewalls such as Cisco, Meraki, Palo Alto, and Fortinet

Intermediate understanding of multi-vendor switching such as Cisco Catalyst/Nexus switching, Aruba, HPE, and Juniper

Intermediate understanding of WLAN technologies from Cisco, Meraki, Aruba, and ExtremeNetworks

Intermediate understanding of IPSEC VPN configurations

Firm understanding of TCP/IP and core networking fundamentals mastery

Experience troubleshooting/configuring firewalls from multiple common vendors

Experience working with multiple environments that utilize a wide variety of network infrastructure

Experience working with ServiceNow or a similar ticketing system

Desired Experience:

Experience with Cisco UC, WebEx, and Microsoft Teams Calling, including user MACDs

Experience with Meraki switching, wireless, and security appliances strongly desired

Experience working at an IT MSP strongly desired

Experience with Aruba EdgeConnect SD-WAN troubleshooting and configuration

Experience troubleshooting and managing Juniper Mist Access Points

Experience troubleshooting and configuring Aruba ClearPass

Education and Certifications:

Required certifications: CCNA

Desired Certifications: CCNP Enterprise, Palo Alto Certified Network Security Administrator (PCNSA), Palo Alto Networks Certified Network Security Engineer (PCNSE), Junos Associate (JNCIA-Junos), Aruba Certified Associate – Network Security

Bachelor’s degree desired
