The incumbent in this position functions under the supervision of a Community Health Nursing Supervisor; Occupies a ten-month Career Service position and works only when school is in session. The incumbent must possess a current RN license in the State of Florida.

School Health Duties:

Maintains quality of services delivered in all tasks associated with position as evidenced in periodic evaluation/monitoring performance of specific competencies. In the event of a disaster, this health department is required to assume specific responsibilities during and after the event. This employee will be expected to report for duty during and/or after the disaster as needed.

All information held in health records is confidential, with access governed by state and federal laws. Confidential information includes the clients name, address, medical, social and financial data and services received. Sexually transmitted disease and pregnancy information is of a more sensitive nature and is to be maintained by the school nurse in a separate confidential file inaccessible to other staff. This employee will adhere to all regulations re: confidentiality of clients personal and medical information.

Schedules, coordinates, carries out health screenings on mandated grade levels and on referrals; assists families in need to obtain further medical care as indicated by abnormal findings following routine screenings; intervenes on behalf of the student with school personnel when health issues may affect the educational process; participates in staffing and child study process towards placement of students in ESE programs. Health screenings may require lifting or carrying equipment weighing 20 pounds or more. Positioning of the screener occasionally requires bending, stooping, or stretching to accommodate the correct screening technique.

Performs the daily activities in the school health room in the absence of the Health Support Tech. or LPN, including administration of medications, special procedures, contacting parents and counseling students regarding health issues; records health information accurately, completely, legibly, and grammatically correct; responds promptly to emergency situations which may require carrying emergency supplies/equipment to any location on campus; provides first aid to any injured student or staff person at whatever location on campus this may be required (classroom, gymnasium, playground, etc.).

Acts as an independent agent of this department in the role of school nurse working within the school district; trains, monitors, and evaluates health support staff in the school health setting, insuring that students and staff have a safe, healthy environment in which to work; provides on -going educational programs, training of staff to perform medication administration, special procedures, etc. according to state and local guidelines; acts as case manager for students with special acute and chronic conditions, coordinating services between parents and physicians; makes referrals for identified health issues by sending letters, making phone calls and home visits as indicated; follows up to insure satisfactory outcomes are achieved; reviews student health records to insure that compulsory immunization laws are met and that student health issues are identified and addressed; initiates and updates student health care plans for those students with special medical problems. Verbal communication with parents, staff, students, and health care providers is essential to make appropriate referrals. Employee must be able to hear normal conversational levels and be able to communicate in an effective manner so as to establish trust and defuse any negative situations.

TEAM LEAD RESPONSIBILITIES:

School Health

Assists with new school health employee orientation utilizing established training materials as assigned; acts as preceptor for students from local schools of nursing assigned to affiliate with the Health Department in the School Health Services Program. Maintains CPR/First Aid certification as required.

Nursing Mentorship

Assist DON in the implementation of nursing practice at DOH Manatee. Serves on committees and attends meetings related to matters of concern as required. Attends and participates in staff development such as staff meetings and in-service/continuing education. Participates with other staff in developing solutions to operational problems. Assists in the coordination of activities with other entities within department and community agencies. Participates in the mentoring of staff and students; Identifies, plans, and develops resources to augment program operations; provides technical assistance and serves as the liaison with community organizations.

Clinic Duties

Provides direct patient care, nursing assessments, medical histories, health promotion education and healthy lifestyles counseling in a culturally sensitive manner.

Screens for domestic violence and provides intervention as indicated. Assesses tobacco use and provides cessation information.

Provides preconception, contraception, and pregnancy education and counseling.

Conducts HIV screening and counseling.

Performs screening and testing for tuberculosis.

Administers oral and injectable vaccines in accordance with ACIP and CDC recommendations and enters information into Florida SHOTS and HMS. Issues medications under the nurse issuance protocol.

Counsels and refers for sterilization procedures.

Assists physicians in the exam room. Accurately completes all paperwork associated with various physical exams.

Documents in the EHR and codes all services into HMS.

ADDITIONAL JOB-RELATED REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

Emergency Duty- Incumbent may be required to work during or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required for the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross Shelters, or to perform other emergency duties including, but limited to responses to or threats involving any disaster, or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.

Trainings/Meetings-Attend all mandatory meeting/trainings as assigned by the position.

Perform other duties as assigned.
