This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NISTrecognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.

The work will entail:
The PREP associate will carry out a wide range of experimental investigations on quantum information processing using trapped atomic ions. This includes the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of trapped ion apparatus (including vacuum systems, laser and optical systems, rf/microwave electronics, low-noise electronics, computer control systems, cryogenic systems, and more), as well as the conception and implementation of scientific research goals using trapped ion apparatus, including experimental conception and design, data taking, data analysis, and reporting of results in peer-reviewed publications in the open scientific literature and/or presentations at conferences. The PREP associate will be responsible for providing day-to-day laboratory guidance and informal technical advising to a small team of Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers, with assistance from NIST staff.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
Design, construction, commissioning, and operation of trapped ion apparatus and constituent parts
Conception and implementation of scientific research projects in quantum information processing with trapped atomic ions
Day-to-day informal laboratory supervision of Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers
Data analysis and scientific writing to report results
Presenting results in the open scientific literature and/or at conferences
Helping foster a positive, respectful team environment for scientific research
Helping maintain a safe laboratory environment
Minimum Qualification
Ph.D. in experimental physics or closely related field
Minimum 5 years of postdoctoral research experience in experimental physics or closely related field
Deep experience with trapped atomic ions for quantum information processing and quantum sensing, evidenced by at least 3 years of prior research experience and multiple published papers on these topics in peer-reviewed journals
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with lasers, optics, and ultra-high vacuum systems
Experience mentoring Ph.D. students on scientific research projects in the laboratory
Strong oral and written communication skills
Experience with cryogenic systems (4 K)

Compensation and Benefits
The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $100,000 – $105,000 per year.
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the Universitys good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
