Thermo Fisher Scientifics Materials & Structural Analysis Division (MSD) supplies innovative solutions for microscopy and microanalysis. We provide SEMs, TEMs, and DualBeam™ FIB-SEMs combined with advanced software suites to take customers from questions to usable data by combining high-resolution imaging with physical, elemental, chemical, and electrical analysis across scales and modes – through the broadest sample types.
The Advanced Technology Group in Hillsboro is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Focused Ion Beam (FIB) Optics Staff Scientist to join one of its dynamic research team and contribute to the design and development of the Next Generation FIB technology. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in charged particles beam optics, electron microscopy, and a passion for innovation.
Responsibilities:
Design and simulate FIB optics components and columns
Develop novel techniques for controlling ion beam trajectories, beam size, and beam current density
Characterize FIB optics performance through simulations, experiments, and analysis
Develop and maintain in-house FIB modeling software tools
Collaborate with multi-functional engineering teams to integrate optics components into FIB systems
Maintain extensive knowledge of principles and theories of FIBs, ion sources and related-systems
Actively participate in developing FIB technology-related patent applications
Lead small-sized FIB development projects
Develop research proposals, contribute to improving the FIB technology roadmap
Prepare reports and presentations to communicate findings
Provide technical expertise and support to internal and external partners
Qualifications:
M.S. Degree with minimum of 10 years experience or Ph.D. in Physics with minimum of 2 years in a related field with a focus on charged particle optics.
Experience in ion beam optics design, simulation, and characterization
Proficiency in CAD software and simulation tools for ion optics design
Experience with Python programming language
Hands-on experience with operating Dual Beam systems
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
Experience using laboratory equipment, including electronics, high voltage and vacuum systems
Excellent data processing and analytical skills
Strong communication and collaboration abilities
Ability to lead small-sized projects
Ability to work independently and in a team environment
