Description
SUMMARY:
The person in this position is responsible for repairing and maintaining all aspects of the rail, including frogs, rail ends, turnouts, switch points, and glue joints, using the arc, acetylene, or thermite welding processes. This person also replaces rail anchors, drive spikes, and tamp ballast; assists other employees in changing out rail with rail tongs; operates electric and gas welding equipment to join a variety of metals and alloys such as aluminum, cast iron, steel, and bronze; and follows rules and regulations, including safety rules, operating rules, FRA regulations, and AAR rules.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Inspect area after hot work has been performed to detect and extinguish any live sparks or smoldering fires
Test rail after using the thermite welding procedure to detect voids, lack of fusion, or other defects in the rail
Inspect all equipment daily to check for leaky cylinders, hoses, or connections
Ensure that fire extinguishers are filled before going out to the work site
Clean work pieces to remove impurities, such as slag, rust, and grease
Monitor and maintain flow of gases; light torch and adjust gas mixture and pressure to obtain desired flame when making field welds
Cut gap in parts parallel to joint, using gas torch, place wax pattern and mold box around gap, and place gate and riser patterns into specific positions
Assist in performing daily (twenty-four hour) locomotive inspection, including air brake cleaning and testing, in accordance with FRA regulations and at other intervals in accordance with company policy
Perform periodic service on locomotives in accordance with company policy that includes changing oil; turbo inspection; fueling; changing engine air and air compressor filters; greasing couplings, fittings, and traction motor gears; electrical testing and repair; and fuel linkage
Assist with replacing locomotive and diesel engine components, including wheels or trucks, traction motors, springs, couplers, draft gear assembly, gear cases, cylinder assemblies, and heating equipment
Diagnose malfunctions in diesel engines, air equipment, trucks, or other components in order to determine nature of problem and needed repair or replacement
Perform daily service of locomotive units: fuels, waters, lubricants, and oils; wipe down and clean unit/windows; check supplies and drinking water
Perform periodic and annual inspections and understands FRA regulations pertaining to inspections
Manage other projects and perform other duties as assigned
REQUIRED SKILLS AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Knowledgeable handling of hazardous and nonhazardous waste products
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR CREDENTIALS:
Welder certification preferred
