Position Summary:

Monitors, operates, and maintains our three high‐pressure steam boilers and their peripheral boiler room equipment. Makes periodic rounds to observe building systems equipment in all mechanical rooms. Responds to general light maintenance calls as needed when assigned to 3:30 p.m. ‐ 11:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. ‐ 7:00 a.m. shifts; assigned duties regarding fire alarm response and reset; performs assigned security duties.

Education, License & Cert:

High school graduate or equivalent. Two (2) years boiler room operation experience preferred but not required.

Experience:

Ability to read and understand pertinent equipment instruction and maintenance manuals. Legible handwriting to document shift activities and events in the log per established procedures.

Essential Functions:

Monitors steam boiler and combustion system operation; steam production vs. steam demand; combustion and boiler efficiency; quality of boiler water chemistry; and function of all peripheral boiler‐room equipment, controls, and services.

Operates the steam boilers, the combustion systems, and peripheral equipment to maintain uninterrupted service and accommodate changing demands of the hospital. Also operates each boiler as needed to light off, stand by, secure, or prepare for storage. Follows established operating practices and procedures to ensure reliability and safety of the steam generation plant.

Maintains the steam boilers, the combustion systems, peripheral equipment, and controls and services.

Recognizes conditions symptomatic of need for adjustment, repair, or replacement. Adjusts as required, implements repairs and installations. Performs varied duties on fire box, tubes fire side, tubes water side to include, but not limited to piping, valves, pumps, gauges, and steam reducing stations.

Tests boiler water for chemistry and solids content. Adjusts chemical in feed to boiler water for needed correction. Tests stack gasses (products of combustion) for chemistry and temperature. Adjusts fuel air ratio to optimize combustion efficiency.

Maintains as assigned area of the boiler room, including equipment, in standard condition of finish by cleaning, polishing, or painting.

Documents in the Boiler Room Log all notable events and activities, including adjustments, rounds, operations irregularities, etc., per departmental procedure.

Makes rounds once per shift to all machine rooms and observes operation of building systems equipment; reports abnormal equipment operation or abnormal conditions to appropriate person in accordance with department guidelines.

Responds to maintenance calls throughout the hospital when on duty 3:30p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Monday through Friday, and always Saturday, Sunday, and holidays. Initiates action on minor incidents only, report or defers all other following established department procedures.

Performs routine tasks to include, but not limited to the following activities: securing building perimeter doors according to an established schedule: assisting A.D.N. and Security Officer during emergency situations, inspection of the flag; and seasonal maintenance of sidewalk approaches to Main, ER, and doctors entrances.

Other Duties:

Demonstrates age specific competencies as per unit standards. Demonstrates technical competencies as per department standards.

Pay rate ranges from $19.63 – $28.71 per hour.
