About SIPS: The CALS School of Integrative of Plant Science (SIPS) encompasses five fields: Horticulture, Plant Biology, Plant Breeding & Genetics, Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology, and Soil and Crop Sciences. Combined there are 100 faculty, ~200 undergraduate majors, 200 graduate students in six fields, and 600 other employees located in Ithaca, Geneva, and other satellite locations across New York State. The School offers the multidisciplinary undergraduate major in the Plant Sciences and is also home to the Agricultural Sciences major. School faculty also contribute to the Biology, Global Development, and Viticulture & Enology majors.

Position Summary:

Success Factors

The selected applicant will work approximately 20 hrs/ week with Dr. Bauerle to design projects aimed at enhancing our understanding of plant-soil interactions, adaptation, or related areas. Specifically, the position will work on funded projects that investigate root exudates, soil biogeochemistry and microbial ecology focusing on plant-soil interactions and/or spatiotemporal patterns of chemical and biological properties in the rhizosphere. To achieve this understanding, the candidate will combine approaches such as high-throughput genomics, data analysis, microbiology, lab assays, and field studies. Further responsibilities include data analyses and publication preparation for publication in refereed scientific journals, general lab duties and organization, record keeping and reporting for associated funding agencies. Guidance of graduate students and supervision of undergraduate assistants will occur when applicable.

Required Qualifications:

  • Applicants should have experience in plant science or other related appropriate field
  • Field, greenhouse, and/or lab research experience.
  • The ability to manage and analyze large datasets.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • The ability to work effectively both in a team and independently
  • Associates Degree and up to 2 years relevant experience, or equivalent combination.
  • Must have and maintain valid and unrestricted NYS drivers license and be cleared to drive for university business.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of LCMS and GCMS
  • Research experience in plant ecophysiology, root biology, or soil biogeochemistry
  • Familiarity with multivariate data analysis approaches, such as omics or spatial statistics
