Description
The City of Norfolk Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking intermittent part-time Recreation Aides responsible for supporting recreation programs and activities and assisting program participants with a focus on athletics and fitness.

Department Hiring Rate: $15.00/hour
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
Assists with the planning and implementation of programs including sports competitions, senior recreation, fitness, skate park, therapeutic recreation, and special events.
Provides oversight and direction of program participants and volunteers, monitors events, programs, participants, and spectators.
Performs administrative duties including answering phones, responding to patrons, completing forms, setting up and breaking down necessary equipment, etc.
Maintains facility order and cleanliness.
Maintains a professional demeanor and appearance.
Enforces facility rules and entrance requirements
This position requires excellent inter-personal, communication and organizational skills and the ability to effectively interact with and contribute to the growth and development of diverse citizen groups.
Ability to see, hear, stand/walk for extended periods of time, lift from ground to above shoulder, climb, bend, stoop, sit, push, pull, perform tasks requiring manual dexterity and utilize telephone communications
Education/Experience
Requires level of knowledge equivalent to less than high school or equivalency; Graduation from high school or equivalent preferred.
At least one year experience working in a customer service setting or experience working with children/youth in a recreation, athletics, fitness, aquatics, education setting preferred.
CPR/AED and First Aid certification is preferred.
Additional Information & Requirements
Work Location: Various recreation facilities within Norfolk
Work Hours: Monday to Sunday; 6:00 a.m. – 12:00 a.m.; not to exceed 40 hours per week; flexible hours will apply including weekends, holidays, and special events.
Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.
Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.
Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.
Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
