Orientation Requirement
The Student Nurse Tech position requires orientation attendance Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm starting 12/16 thru 12/20.
Employment is contingent on full orientation attendance.
JOB SUMMARY
The Student Nurse Technician, under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN), provides care and procedures to neonatal, pediatric, adult or geriatric patients. This position reports and documents observations, assists with procedures, and performs other unit-activities as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE
Performs tasks which are most commonly delegated by an RN and may include: non-invasive and non-sterile treatments; collecting, reporting, and documenting of data (e.g., vital signs, height, weight, intake and output, blood glucose monitoring via fingerstick blood samples, test strips and portable meters; urine test for sugar and hematest results, environmental situations, patient or family comments relating to the patient’s care, behaviors related to the plan of care); patient ambulation, positioning, and turning; transportation of patients within the facility; placing and retrieving of meal trays, preparing and feeding food; personal hygiene and elimination, including vaginal irrigations and cleansing enemas; socialization activities; activities of daily living; and reinforcement of health teaching planned and provided by the RN.
Performs related technical, service, and clerical duties which may include: running errands; picking up supplies; obtaining and delivering specimens; receiving and sorting test results; answering telephones; keeping patient rooms clean and orderly; stocking linens, supplies, tissues, and towels; changing bed linens, and disposing of trash.
Communicates data to the RN, patient response to treatment and patient status, to facilitate timely patient assessment and evaluation.
Documents information according to department and facility policies and procedures.
Follows the plan of care which includes the age or developmental stage of the patient. Works to meet unit, department, facility, and organizational goals for patient care.
Attends applicable or required in-services and educational programs and staff conferences.
Complies with applicable policies and procedures, adheres to infection control and safety guidelines, protects and maintains patient privacy and confidentiality, and ensures safe work and care environment for self and patients. Observes proper body mechanics while performing work area duties and patient care.
Nursing students employed as techs are unlicensed assistive personnel (UAPs). Tasks cannot be delegated to UAPs that require nursing judgment/assessment and follow-up.
KEY SUCCESS FACTORS
Enrolled in an accredited diploma, associate degree, or baccalaureate degree nursing program. Upon graduation, BSWH employees may continue to work as a Nurse Tech until their concurred upon start date as a Graduate Nurse or Registered Nurse.
Must maintain current record of continuing education activities.
Must meet required competencies.

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION – H.S. Diploma/GED Equivalent & Current participation in core nursing classes in an accredited diploma, associate degree, or baccalaureate degree nursing program.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSE/REGISTRATION –
Basic Life Support (BLS): BLS within 30 days or hire or transfer.
