Job Description
To carry out at a full Electrical Engineering level engineering assignments related to Protective Relaying and Integration Systems. To perform engineering work in the above areas which requires specific technical and company knowledge as well as originality and judgment in the technical analysis and independent evaluation, selection and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria.
Responsibilities
Designs the application of detailed protection schemes and integration systems for the electrical distribution, transmission, substation, and generating stations. Specifies protective relays and certain other related protective equipment for the electric system. Develops, performs, and evaluates system fault studies in order to determine coordination and setting of protective devices. Designs detailed Substation Integration schemes and specifies substation equipment necessary for the remote control, status indication and data viewing of substation equipment.
Provides compliance, technical, operational, and analytical support for the Protection & Relaying department on items such as NERC CIP & PRC compliance and protective relay operation analysis. Engineering support also includes fault studies as required; relay coordination; developing, implementing and maintaining compliance procedures; recommends, analyzes, and supports system capital projects for corrective action plans; and develops practices and procedures that support the Company’s overall compliance with applicable mandatory reliability standards. Participates in regional operating committees, task forces, and work groups as required.
Supports the development of strategies and internal control documentation for Protection & Relaying department coordination with inter-utility and intra-utility customers to remain compliant with the Federal Utility Requirements and NERC Standards on an on-going basis. Performs other duties as assigned. Job duties are subject to change as directed by leadership.
Requirements
Bachelor of Science in ABET accredited Engineering Program.
Effective and flexible communication skills.
Entry Engineer:
0-1 years engineering work experience preferred.
Assistant Engineer:
Minimum of one (1) year of engineering work experience required.
Associate Engineer:
Minimum of two (2) years of engineering work experience required.
Engineer:
Minimum of four (4) years engineering work experience required.
Sr. Engineer:
Minimum of eight (8) years engineering work experience required.
Professional Engineering License.
Demonstrated skills illustrating their use of productivity, presentation, and analytical tools specific to his/her area of expertise.
Demonstrated technical leadership within engineering.
Demonstrated positive and effective working relationships with internal and external parties.
Advanced knowledge, skills, technical proficiency and abilities as demonstrated by a professional engineering license.
Specialty technical proficiency, project leadership, ability to be self-directed.
Preferred Requirements
Power System knowledge or emphasis in a degree and/or ability to utilize engineering application software desired.
NERC CIP and PRC standards knowledge is desired.
Experience with SEL relays and protection schemes.
Computer programming experience in languages such as SQL, Python, and VBA.
Familiar with database development and database structuring.
Advanced technical writing abilities.
Other combinations of experience, training, and education may be considered.

Hybrid work options are available for this role. The successful candidate will be required to work at our Spokane, Washington headquarters at least 3 days per week including Mondays and Tuesdays with an additional day determined by the employee and manager.
