Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: To qualify for this position, you must have one or more of the following:• Successful completion of NYS two-year Plumber & Steamfitter Traineeship or NYS two-year plumbing training program;• Successful completion of any equivalent plumbing two-year training or apprenticeship program;• Four (4) years of full-time experience in plumbing under a skilled journey level plumber which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprenticeship training in plumbing or training gained by completion of technical courses in plumbing at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year for year basis.Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade specific class room instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of C or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on the job training.Departmental Operating Needs: The incumbent must have a journey level understanding of how to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, construct and test plumbing and steam systems.The successful candidate:• Must communicate well with other employees.• Must possess and have demonstrated positive customer service skills.• Must be able to understand and follow written and/or oral instructions.• Must be able to communicate well with the entire campus community and demonstrate a willingness to provide customer service and support when advised of problems and equipment malfunctions.• Since the activities of other employees depend upon the availability of the employee in this position, reliable attendance is a factor that will be considered when filling this vacancy.• Must have NYSDOH Backflow testing Certification.Since the activities of other employees depend upon the availability of the employee in this position, reliable attendance is a factor that will be considered when filling this vacancy.Incumbent of this position must be willing and able to respond to after hour calls resulting from equipment and system failures that may arise at any time of day or any day of the week. The incumbent may be required to work during adverse weather conditions to ensure continuous operation of all plumbing and HVAC systems.This position requires traveling within and between campuses. A valid license to operate a motor vehicle in NYS is preferred, or candidate should otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.Physical Demands:Candidate will be working near electrical equipment, gas-fired equipment, pressure vessels, and other equipment and in conditions that could potentially be hazardous if industry best-practices and safety procedures are not followed. The successful candidate is required to have confidence in their own abilities, and be able to work safely and proficiently on this equipment and in this environment, at any time of day or day or week.Bending, twisting, ability to lift 50 pounds, climb ladders, access equipment located on mezzanines, catwalks, basements and crawlspaces. Ability to work off ladders, scaffolding, in confined spaces and/or where air monitoring may be required. Work in loud/noisy dusty/dirty environments. Candidate must be able to stand, walk, lift, carry, reach, push and pulling of material and equipment and must be able to perform the physical demands of the position as outlined in the Position Summary.Preferred Qualifications:• Must be a quick learner and exhibit self motivational skills.• Adequate ability to understand specialty Plumbing/Piefitting systems.• Strong team mentality.• Willing to earn technical certification’s, relevant training, or other documentation that illustrates depth in this trade.• Understand and execute safe work practices and procedures.• Demonstrate applicable institutional knowledge and practices of the campuses and its operation.• Be willing to work overtime and holidays, sometimes with little or no advance notice.• Posses a New York state Certified Backflow Preventer license.
Duties Description Position Summary: The Trades Specialist (Plumber Steamfitter) position is located within the Facilities Department at the University. The incumbent of this position will be responsible to:• Install plumbing systems• Plan and layout of piping systems and new fixture installation• Repair of plumbing and steam systems including troubleshooting plumbing and heating systems/equipment using BMS systems• Work with other plumber/steamfitters as well as semi-skilled and unskilled employees in small group projects• Read blueprints, plan, and layout work procedures to make repairs and plan new installations or alterations to existing installations of high and low pressure pipe systems that carry water, steam, air or other liquids or gases.• Collect the relevant information to estimate labor and material requirements for routine work and projects.• Diagnose malfunctions in fixtures or equipment and uses appropriate test equipment such as pressure and vacuum gauges to determine cause and location of trouble.• Support the growing plumbing, HVAC, and sprinkler system maintenance needs of the campus community.• Lead a group of maintenance assistants and maintenance helpers.• Repair, maintains and installs plumbing fixtures and appliances such as sinks, shower baths, commodes, drinking fountains, gas and water meters, gas hot water heaters and other appliance and heating systems.• Must at a journey level have a working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the plumbing and steam fitting trade.
