Position Summary
HIGHLIGHTS
The SUNY Geneseo Facilities Department is looking for a reliable and dedicated individual to join our team as a Facility Operations Assistant 1. As a Facility Operations Assistant 1, you will perform a variety of routine tasks requiring medium to heavy physical effort to assist in the maintenance and repair of buildings, roads, offices, furniture, facilities, and campus landscape associated with grounds tasks.
Your primary responsibility will be completing activities as part of a work crew to perform upkeep for the campus grounds and landscaping. You will be responsible for operating various tools including forklifts, pallet jacks, power tools, dollies, hand trucks, mowers, weed eaters, and tractors.
This position requires the ability to work shifts and weekends, based on a 40-hour workweek, plus scheduled and unscheduled overtime when necessary. You may be working outdoors in inclement weather.
Required Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
There are no education or experience qualifications for this class. Applicants must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position and be able to understand and carry out written or oral instructions. When required to operate motor vehicles, incumbents must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle being operated.
Preferred Qualifications
DEPARTMENT OPERATING NEEDS
Ability to understand and follow instructions, read, write, and communicate
Possession of a satisfactory time and attendance record.
Possession of Initial Certification in Pesticide application (ornamental and turf). If not already in possession, will need to achieve within one year of hire and work progressively towards becoming a fully certified applicator.
Ability to apply knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, safety standards and procedures of the trade(s) as it relates to the job duties.

Function 1: Maintain grounds, roadways, and trails.
Clear sites, prepare them for planting and plant seeds, trees, shrubbery, and flowers
Clean grounds, roadways, and structures by sweeping, raking shoveling, mowing, and removing by hand debris, leaves, branches, snow, ice, trash, etc.
Maintain areas by cutting grass, pruning plants, cutting and removing dead branches and trees, placing mulch materials and stone, and fertilizing and watering plants and grass
Maintain athletic fields by cutting and raking grass, replacing sod in damaged areas, lining and preparing fields, and maintaining and repairing artificial turf
Install and maintain fences, guide rails, signs, walkways, and snow fencing
Dig and excavate ditches, paths, and water and stream lines as well as types of utility

Function 2: Operation and maintenance of equipment
Operate lawnmowers and plows to maintain grounds, parking lots, and walkways
Operate tractors and related equipment for landscaping and snow removal
Assist in mounting and dismounting major assemblies such as plows and salt spreaders
Maintain vehicles and equipment by cleaning, scraping off rust and accretions, and replacing simple parts such as wipers, tires, and batteries
