JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
An exciting opportunity is available for a self-motivated, inquisitive, and innovative scholar to join our team as the Department Head for the Process Physics, Analytics, and Engineering Department, which is part of the Materials Science Division at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. In this role, you will be part of more than a dozen world-class engineers, scientists, and support staff that are engaged in the discovery, development, and deployment of Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology and a member of the Center for Additive Manufacturing, CIMP-3D, Center for Innovative Material Processing through Direct Digital Deposition. This position will be filled as a non-tenure Research Faculty or a Research and Development Engineer.
You will:
Lead the development of proposals and projects that advance the state-of-the-art of metal and ceramic additive manufacturing for our DoD and industrial sponsors, involving experiment planning, AM processing, process sensing and control, data analysis (including with machine learning and artificial intelligence), design-for-AM, material characterization (e.g. optical and scanning electron microscopy, x-ray CT scanning, fractography, etc.), and more
Provide project updates to sponsors, present research findings at conferences, and publish in peer-reviewed journals
Team with more than fifty CIMP-3D Faculty Associates across Penn State on cutting-edge multi-disciplinary research, seek adjunct faculty positions with academic units, and advise and educate students
Plan, staff, and execute programs to ensure all departmental staff and faculty are appropriately and sufficiently tasked at all times
Recruit, retain, and define performance expectations of department staff and faculty, identify professional development and training opportunities, mentor and encourage creativity in innovative technologies and research, and evaluate professional growth through performance reviews
Faculty rank will be commensurate with education and experience. Minimum educational requirements include a PhD in a related engineering or science field.
Required skills/experience areas include:
Minimum of five years of experience in all aspects of additive manufacturing as mentioned above, with success as team lead of projects
A scholarly record that includes at minimum of three related publications in peer-reviewed journals
Previous success with collaborations in a multi-disciplinary, team-oriented, culture
Preferred skills/experience areas include:
Active government security clearance
Your working location will be fully on-site, located in State College, PA.
