Cryogenics Process Engineer

### Position Summary

As a Cryogenics Process Engineer, you will be responsible for the following: 

– Perform research and development in the advancement of cryogenic processes and technology, specifically in regards to 2-K and 4.5-K cryogenic refrigeration and critical supporting sub-systems. 
– Cryogenic systems mechanical design,
– Helium system processes, instrumentation, safety issues pertaining to helium cryogenic systems, standard equipment-system specification development, and cost estimation model development.
– Support the development of cryogenic research plans and proposals, including budgetary and schedule elements 
– Provide technical direction to staff engineers 
– Support FRIB accelerator operations by performing measurements associated with FRIB cryogenic equipment supported by the department (e.g., cryogenic plant, cryogenic transfer lines, cryo-modules and superconducting magnets)
– Responds to problems needed during system failure and maintenance to maintain 24/7 operation of the cryogenic systems, requiring flexibility in working hours to overcome unforeseen system breakdowns
– Present plans and outcomes of research and development activities to internal and external stakeholders, including independent and DOE review groups and professional organizations, publish results
– Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification

 

As a Cryogenics Process Engineer, you will have the following knowledge, skills and abilities: 

– Thorough knowledge in the design, fabrication, and operation of cryogenic plants which are efficient over a wide range of process conditions, capacities, and load conditions; such as those implemented for the FRIB cryogenic system
– Demonstrated knowledge of accelerator systems and/or complex systems facility operations
– Knowledge in department cryogenic-mechanical activities in all phases, including design/analysis, integration, testing and commissioning
– Ability to maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics
– Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing with all audiences
– Knowledge of and strict adherence to safety programs, OSHA, and all related rules, regulations, and procedures which apply to this positions responsibilities

### Required Degree

Doctorate -Engineering or related technical field

### Minimum Requirements

– Ph.D. degree in engineering or a related technical field
– Demonstrated interest in design, construction, and operation of cryogenic systems, including large 4.5-K and 2 K cryogenic systems utilized in accelerators in regards to performance, efficiency, safety, and reliable operations
– Some experience in cryogenic engineering, cryogenic systems, measurements and cryogenic equipment
