High Power Targetry Scientist

### Position Summary

Major Duties/Position Responsibilities

– Target 
– Participate in the design of multi-slice rotating graphite target system
– Thermal analysis for the single and multi-slice rotating target system
– Support FRIB Operations by maintaining and preparing the target system
– Beam dump 
– Thermal analysis for mini-channel and rotating beam dump
– Develop advanced materials for beam intercept devices (
– Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities to successfully perform the position

– Thorough knowledge of target and beam dump systems in heavy ion accelerator
– High level of expertise in the materials science field
– Ability to use an electron microscope that produces an image of the material for studying radiation damage
– Ability to perform thermal/mechanical simulations
– Ability to design experimental instruments with scientific tools
– Ability to perform shift work periodically
– Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing, with all audiences

### Required Degree

Doctorate -Physics or material science

### Minimum Requirements

– PhD in Physics or material science
– Record of accomplishment in the field of expertise
– Experience in thermal analysis with scientific software (COMSOL multi-physics of ANSYS fluent)

### Desired Qualifications

– Experience with software and hardware for instrument design and fabrication
– Experience at experimental research projects, data analysis, physics interpretations and reporting of the results
