QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any of the following will qualify:

1. Two years of experience in the operation or maintenance of a high voltage power generation facility, or

2. Three years of experience in the operation, repair and/or maintenance of chemical, pulp and paper, or oil or gas processing facilities, or

3. Four years of experience in the operation, repair and/or maintenance of large commercial or industrial type stationary engines or mechanical equipment such as air conditioning, heating, refrigeration, pumping, generating, chillers, or closely related systems.

SUBSTITUTIONS (FOR OPTION 3 ONLY):

Training in commercial air conditioning, refrigeration or diesel mechanics will substitute for a maximum of two years of the required experience on a month for month basis.

NOTE (FOR OPTION 3 ONLY):

Incidental duties in operating or maintaining ones own heating, air conditioning or related equipment will not be considered as qualifying experience.

FUNCTION OF WORK:

To regulate, monitor, service, and maintain a combined heat and power generation facility that includes gas turbine and/or steam turbine generator(s) with a three-phase generation capacity of two megawatts or more at 13,800 volts, high-voltage power distribution switchgear, power boilers and/or heat recovery steam generators of 50,000 lbs/hr or more steam capacity, natural gas distribution system of 200 psig or more and a centralized computer based distributed control system.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

General from a higher-level Operating Engineer or agency official.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

None.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:

Differs from the Operating Engineer Master by the presence of responsibility for regulating, monitoring, servicing, and maintenance of a combined heat and power generation facility.

Differs from the Operating Engineer Foreman by the absence of responsibility for providing direct-line supervision over at least two operating engineer positions.

Differs from the Operating Engineer Foreman Cogeneration by the absence of responsibility for providing direct-line supervision over one Operating Engineer Cogeneration position.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED.

Keeps operating log sheets.

Operates process equipment to shut down gas and steam turbine generators, heat recovery steam generators, and power boilers.

Opens and closes high voltage switchgear as required.

Reads and monitors electrical energy flow through distributions circuits and opens and closes circuit breakers accordingly.

Collects and interprets data in order to maintain optimum plant operation.

Performs preventive maintenance work on boilers and related equipment such as: ventilation and refrigeration equipment, air conditioning machinery, generators, suction fans, pumps, and compressors.

Performs related duties as required.
