Wastewater Superintendent

POSITION SUMMARY
The Wastewater Superintendent is responsible for supervising the day-to-day operations and
maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant to ensure its in compliance with the regulatory
procedures and reporting practices. The job involves planning, organizing, and directing programs
and activities for the efficient operation of the wastewater treatment system. The superintendent is
responsible for overseeing the supervisory, administrative, and technical operations of the
wastewater treatment facility, lift stations, and collection system.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversee the day-to-day operations of activated sludge treatment facility with a permitted
average flow of .035 MGD with capacity of 0.7 MGD after addition of plant.
Manage a crew of 2 employees
Develop and implement operational and maintenance process control strategies to
optimize plant performance and reduce cost
Manage plants budget, ensuring that all expenditures are within budget and that
resources are used efficiently and for operational use only
Identify long-term plant goals and objectives and develop strategies to achieve them
Ensure compliance with all environmental regulations and permit requirements
Collaborate with other departments, internal and external agencies and stakeholders to
ensure effective communication and coordination
Prepare and present reports to senior management and regulatory agencies as required
Various other duties as assigned
This position is an essential service position and will require providing services during
emergency situations
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of plant equipment, instrumentation, and computer systems (UV Treatment)
Knowledge of SCADA systems, PLCs, and other automated systems
Knowledge of safety regulations and protocols, and experience implementing safety
programs
Ability to troubleshoot and identify the root cause of problems, and to develop and
implement solutions
Ability to read and understand written guidelines from manuals, blueprints and regulations
Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with
city employees and the public

Department: Public Works Hiring Range: $25.00-$30.00

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Grade “C” Wastewater Certification issued by Texas Commission of Environmental Quality
(TCEQ) required. Class B preferred or must achieve within 2 years.
5 years of experience working in a wastewater treatment plant or related industry is
required with increasing levels of responsibility.
In-depth knowledge of activated sludge process, wastewater treatment processes using
UV, and regulations related to wastewater treatment required.
Experience in leadership or management role is also preferred.
A bachelors degree in environmental science, engineering or a related field is preferred;
educational requirements can be adjusted based on field experience.
Must be within a 30-minute response time and on call rotation
Valid Texas Driver License Class “C” required

Must submit to and pass a pre-employment background check and drug test.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Strenuous physical outdoor work with continuous exposure to elements such as dust, fumes, odors,
dampness, raw sewage, noise, and outside weather conditions. Physical demands include frequent
lifting and carrying of objects over 75 pounds, often combined with stooping, bending, twisting,
crawling, and reaching. Walk on a variety of uneven, sometimes slippery surfaces, work in or near
traffic. Stand and walk while working for extended periods of time; Good motor coordination skills,
worker must be able to coordinate his or her eyes, hands, fingers, and feet rapidly.
