POSITION SUMMARY:

The Corporate Environmental Support team is responsible for providing leadership on emerging issues on behalf of the company in industry trade groups, regulatory work groups, and with local, state, and federal agencies. We provide business unit and site environmental support on a wide range of topics and functions from permitting to temporary leadership assignments. We also serve as subject matter experts on audit teams. The Advanced Environmental Specialist will serve as a support primarily to the gas processing, pipeline, & logistics assets of the company. The position interfaces with MPC’s corporate Gathering & Processing, Pipeline, Terminals, and Logistics and Storage groups, represents MPC on trade and work groups that are focused on midstream and logistics operations, and assists on audits. The position may also be called upon to serve in temporary assignments at operational locations and other corporate environmental groups.

This position will be located in Findlay, OH. Other MPC locations may be considered.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Interprets and/or develops Company environmental policies and guidelines and develops methods and procedures for implementing and assuring conformance; advises appropriate managers and supervisors of the Company’s goals and requirements; provides guidance and technical assistance in organizing and establishing programs and procedures to implement and administer such requirements, including budget inputs. Monitors compliance with these policies in assigned areas and directs related reports and recommendations to appropriate personnel.​

Designs and/or reviews engineering designs and cost estimates for environmental equipment or systems; determines engineering specifications and recommends equipment, as required.​

Identifies and investigates current and developing environmental problems or issues to determine cause and contributory circumstances; initiates steps to prevent recurrences and provides recommendations with appropriate personnel as well as communicating to senior management.​

Keeps abreast of environmental legislation, regulatory agency actions, and international standards as well as related technological and administrative developments; develops/assists with legislative and regulatory impact assessment to ensure an appropriate response by the Company to governmental proposals; submits required reports and obtains various permits as required.​

Develops environmental information, manuals, training material and programs; informs employees of related policies and procedures; conducts appropriate training sessions. ​

Represents the Company with appropriate trade associations & industry work groups (API, GPA, ILTA & various state organizations) and regulatory agencies (EPA, Federal/State/Local agencies, and USF&W, Army Corps of Engineers, Dept of Energy, etc).

Serves as technical resource to Government Affairs, Legal, Sustainability, and elected officials. Maintains a working knowledge of issues and key Industry contacts, directs activities and budgets, and disseminates pertinent information to support lobbying and advocacy efforts.

Maintains sufficient professional expertise and proficiency in discipline to achieve Company expectations and perform technical assignments.

Participate in MPC technical and supervisory calls/meetings

Support site environmental operations as needed or requested, including permitting, reporting, & regulatory interpretation support

Serve in various temporary assignments in the field and corporate environmental groups as needed

Serve as a subject matter expert on audits and assurance activities

Assist in the development of inexperienced staff

Assist in continuous improvement and cost reduction opportunities

Participate in Corporate Training programs where needed (i.e. PATH Classes) as an Environmental SME

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or GED required with ten (10) years of relevant environmental experience in process industry (e.g., refining, midstream, petrochemical, or other heavy industrial), or Bachelor’s degree in a HES-related field with five (5) years of relevant environmental experience, or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with two (2) years of relevant environmental experience.

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a Physical Science strongly preferred, advanced degree and/or professional licensure preferred (P.E., EIT, CHMM, QEP, etc.)

Seven (7) plus years of experience in environmental engineering, science, and policy, and environmental field experience at a gas processing plant or logistics assets preferred.

This position belongs to a family of jobs with increasing responsibility, competency and skill level.

Final position title and pay grade will be based on the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications.

SKILLS:

Knowledge of Gas Processing, pipeline, & terminal operations, equipment, and processes

Knowledge of Air Quality laws, regulations, and policies that impact MPC’s business units, with focused expertise in at least some of the following Air Quality disciplines:

Air Permitting (both construction/NSR and Title V/Operating permits)

Emissions Inventory

Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems

Stack Testing and evaluation

Tanks Emissions calculations

Leak Detection & Repair

Atmospheric/Community Air Monitoring

NAAQS/Public Health Standards

Additional working knowledge of non-Air Quality environmental laws or regulations such as RCRA, Clean Water Act, TSCA, GHG/Sustainability, etc… is preferred

Experience in maintaining composure and delivering positive results in the face of high-pressure or difficult situations that may result in conflicting or overlapping schedules

Ability to influence peer and competitor groups such as trade groups and regulatory work groups

Strong and effective communication skills with the ability to explain detailed impacts of new rules to field staff as well as provide high level summaries to executive leadership

Ability to interact and collaborate with diverse groups including internal business unit partners, industry trade groups, state and federal advocacy organizations, Environmental Non-Governmental Organizations, and directly with Federal, State, & Local regulatory agencies.

Ability to identify potential environmental issues or impacts across MPC

Strong team player, but must also be able to work individually with limited oversight
