Fleet Technician I

The Technician I in Fleet Services performs light maintenance and repairs efficiently and completely so as to provide excellent customer service. This position works under the direction of the Lead Technician.

## Examples of Duties

Perform preventive maintenance, and minor repairs for city owned vehicles and equipment including the mounting and balancing of tires, oil changes, and the inspection and maintenance of batteries, brakes, fluids, and filters.
Perform some diagnostics of vehicle problems under the supervision of Lead Tech. or other experienced technicians.
Assist in Troubleshooting and diagnosing mechanical issues with various City equipment and vehicles, including gas, alternative fuels, and diesel fuel engines.
Assist in housekeeping as instructed by supervisor and log amount of time, materials, supplies, and parts are used for the repair and maintenance of Fleet vehicles and equipment.
Read and understand repair manuals, to determine manufacturers recommendations for trouble shooting. Also must know computer based systems such as ALLDATA, Shop Key and must have a basic knowledge of computers.
Respond to emergencies and work over-time as assigned by supervisor. May be placed on standby status to be available for emergency support over extended holiday periods.
Maintain shop area, tools, and equipment in a safe and efficient manner. Also maintain inventory of parts, supplies, tools, and equipment.
Must have own tools.
Able to continue training as required.
Able to lift and carry up to 60 pounds.
Able to crawl under, over, or on vehicles/equipment as necessary for repairs and maintenance.
Able to communicate effectively and courteously with the community or other employees over the telephone, in writing, or in person.
May be required to perform other department duties as assigned.

## Typical Qualifications

Must be able to follow equipment repair schematics and diagrams, as well as adhere to all occupational health and safety rules and regulations. Must be skilled/developing in the troubleshooting and repair of fleet vehicles and associated equipment, and have the ability to safely and efficiently use a variety of tools and motor vehicles.

## Education and Experience

Must have a high school diploma or GED. Must hold a valid Texas drivers license with an acceptable driving record. Must have basic knowledge of personal computers. Prefer some ASE certifications. Must be able to obtain an ASE certification in automotive brakes and steering within six months (A5). Must obtain a class B CDL license within six months. Must have at least one year of experience in a garage environment.
