Description:

Working under general supervision the Lighting Technician works in the electrical area, disconnecting and performing work on existing de-energized fixtures and light switches. This classification is responsible for the repair, service, maintenance and installation of retrofit upgrade fixtures for a variety of existing commercial lighting fixtures both indoors and outdoors. This includes ballast replacement, socket repair, wire inspection and replacement and modification of new components and parts. Assignments are normally received in the form of work orders or verbal instructions.

Proactively inspect, troubleshoot, repair or replace indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures. Dismantle and rewire existing fixtures as necessary for proper function.

Test for absence of voltage.

Adjust, test, change and replace sockets. Install retrofits when appropriate.

Install, maintain and repair emergency and regular ballasts. ∙ Clean lenses and reflectors of lighting fixtures.

Respond to lighting calls. With approval from lighting lead or supervisor, conduct any additional lighting repair for client.

Safely disconnect line power and alternate power sources (generator or inverter); identify and secure emergency circuits.

Maintain rolling lamp inventory in service vehicle.

Communicate with supervisors and clients on work progress.

May perform any of the duties described in the Lighting Technician I specification or other duties as assigned.

Additional Skills & Qualifications:

Minimum Education and Experience Required
Two years of commercial lighting experience or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Minimum Qualifications
Lighting Technician II has all of the qualifications described in the Lighting Technician I specification plus the following qualifications:
Demonstrated ability to follow and use electrical safety procedures (e.g., lock out/tag out).
Knowledge of lighting products and parts as required for the job
Experience in lighting maintenance
Knowledge of recent National Electric Code (NEC) lighting codes, pertaining to products and parts required for commercial lighting.
Ability to apply work orders.
Demonstrated ability to work safely, independently and efficiently.
Excellent communication and customer service skills.
Demonstrated ability to learn and apply the University’s commitment to a respectful workplace including, but not limited to, Affirmative Action, diversity and a workplace free of sexual harassment as it applies to their work group.

Certificates and Licenses Required
Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C Non commercial Driver’s License.
Must obtain electric lift certification within 90 days of hire.
