We want to find an innovative, adaptable, and results-oriented Principal IT Architect for our IT & Digital department. This position can be located in Waltham, MA, Brooklyn, NY, Hicksville, NY, or Syracuse, NY (candidates may also reside in either Connecticut, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, or Maine). What youll do

As a Principal IT Architect, youll play a critical role in shaping the technical direction and strategy of National Grids IT architecture. Youll be responsible for leading the design and implementation of high-impact technology solutions. Youll collaborate with senior leadership, business units, and technology teams to ensure alignment with business goals and to drive innovation and efficiency across the organization. Key responsibilities include the following:

  • Develop and maintain the architectural vision and strategy for National Grids technology, ensuring alignment with business objectives and industry best practices.
  • Lead the design of scalable, robust, and secure IT solutions that meet business requirements and support National Grids strategic goals.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and trends to determine their potential impact on National Grids business and technology landscape. Provide recommendations for adoption where appropriate.
  • Establish and enforce architectural standards, policies, and governance frameworks to ensure consistency and quality across all technology initiatives.
  • Work closely with business leaders, IT teams, and external partners to understand requirements, develop solutions, and drive successful implementation.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior architects and other IT professionals, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development.
  • Identify potential risks and develop mitigation strategies to ensure the security, reliability, and performance of National Grids IT technology.
  • Maintain comprehensive architectural documentation, including blueprints, guidelines, and standards, to support ongoing operations and future initiatives.
  • Key Deliverables:

Current State and Target State Architectural designs in alignment to program and product scope: value streams, business capabilities, master data, personas, applications, and key data flows.

Iterations of the Architectural roadmaps showing transitions states of each value stream over the course of the program and product lifecycle: value streams, business capabilities, master data, personas, applications, and key data flows.

Assessments of current and potential technologies for inclusion in National Grids technology landscape.

Tech Debt score for the applications and platforms that make up National Grids estate.

About you
  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related discipline
  • 10 years of experience designing systems for use in large scale enterprises.
  • 5 years of hands-on technology development and/or implementation experience.
  • Strong technical skills around vendor product selection, software and technology analysis, business analytics, interfaces such as REST, and modern software technologies such as Containers and Microservices.
  • Experience with one or more of the TOGAF (or equivalent framework) architectural domains in business, application, data, technology
  • Experience in architectural support of Agile delivery framework and digital product lifecycle.

Our organization follows a hybrid work structure in our service territory (NY & MA and adjacent states) where employees can work remotely or from the office, as needed. Salary

Dowstate NY $173,000 – $204,000 a year

Massachusetts $162,000 – $191,000 a year

Upstate NY$145,000 – $170,000 a year

Salary is commensurate with experience and location

This position has a career path which provides for advancement opportunities within and across bands as you develop and evolve in the position; gaining experience, expertise and acquiring and applying technical skills. Candidates will be assessed and provided offers against the minimum qualifications of this role and their individual experience.
