Assistant Superintendent, Power & Recovery

Job Summary:
To provide day-to-day leadership for all department employees to improve safety, environmental compliance, quality, cost control and production for the Power/Recovery department. Responsible for implementing and updating management and measurement systems to ensure continued improvement in chemical recovery, black liquor evaporators, lime kiln & caustic, power generation, water and waste handling, electrical generation and associated operations.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
Review production reports daily.
Implement process improvement projects to optimize equipment and reduce downtime.
Optimize recovery boiler operation and power generation to maximize pulp production and reduce downtime and costs.
Communicate with other department managers to optimize mill production.
Promote team concept with supervisors and operators to assure continuity in reaching common production goals.
Provide after-hours managerial coverage for department on nights and weekends.
Participate in and encourage the behavior-based safety process.
Review environmental compliance measures daily.
Initiate process improvement projects to eliminate emissions/releases.
Maintain asset management systems to improve equipment performance and reliability
Accountable for an accident-free work environment by managing the department safety work order backlog and maintaining a zero quarterly backlog (within control).
Coordinate scheduled shutdown and unscheduled outage lockout and tag-out.
Deliver operational excellence by coordinating activities between Production and Maintenance by leading the EPAM process which includes: Prioritizing daily work; planning; scheduled shutdowns; and managing maintenance backlogs; reduce break-in work; and take the lead in LOTO, safety and audit items which need both production and maintenance follow-up.
Responsible for keeping maintenance and operating costs with budget.
Keeping “planned work order” backlog according to guidelines; utilize backlog to schedule daily and weekly work list.
Prioritizing and approving break-in or emergency work.
Prioritizing work order backlog.
Scheduling on-the-run backlog.
Screening and approving all work orders for asset area; assuring quality of all work orders (coding accuracy, symptoms, accurately described).
Serve as project originator for maintenance capital in asset area, including documentation.
Being a technical resource for solving chronic and repeat failures, with reliability engineer.
Planning the installation and startup of new equipment to minimize the upset of normal operations.
Work with training resources to maintain detailed, structured on-the-job training manuals for department tasks and jobs.
Ensure the training program for operators is current and appropriate training levels are met.
Guarantee customer quality expectations and support the quality initiatives established by the mill in pursuing 100% customer satisfaction.
Assist other department superintendents with troubleshooting.
Promote ISO standards throughout department.
Consistently recognizing and controlling hazards and hazardous activities and acting to stop unsafe actions of coworkers.
Continually striving to improve our safety and health processes, including providing the tools and training necessary to safety perform our jobs.
Experience/Educational Requirements:
B.S. Engineering or equivalent experience in Power & Recovery operation
Minimum 5 yearsu2019 experience in Power & Recovery processes
Minimum 3 years in a supervisory position
Previous experience with a Production Management System and Computerized Maintenance Management System required.
