Job Description:
In this role, the Structural Engineering will utilize extensive technical expertise and specialized knowledge in the field of structural analysis of solid rocket components and systems. Apply skills to contribute to the development of company objectives and principles, aiming to achieve goals with a focus on solid rocket propulsion. Employ advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts, such as Finite element analysis (FEA) and structural mechanics. Contribute to the creation of innovative principles, ideas, and analytical methods. Provide solutions to highly complex technical challenges and sensitive issues that demand a significant degree of ingenuity, creativity, and innovation.
Essential Functions:
Lead large projects that have significant impact to the business or oversee the activities of others.
Communication with internal (program office, chief engineers, etc.) and external customers
Drives the design from conceptual phase through detailed design
Familiar with hand calculation methods to perform initial sizing and FEA verifications
Detailed stress analysis process procedures using FEA in particular Ansys nonlinear analysis (contact w/ friction, plasticity, large deflections, etc)
Strength evaluation methods
Low Cycle Fatigue evaluation and High Cycle Fatigue evaluation using Goodman and cycle counting procedures
Buckling analysis (eigenvalue, nonlinear, large deflection)
Bolted joint analysis and preload definition
Fracture mechanics analysis (LEFM)
Filament wound pressure vessel design and analysis
Structural analysis of propellant grain
Rocket Motor test instrumentation definition and data processing for production, bench, full engine qualification, etc.
Must be able to obtain a Security Clearance
Requires 10% travel
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 9 years of prior relevant Structural Engineering experience.
Graduate Degree and a minimum of 7 years of prior related Structural Engineering experience.
In lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of prior related Structural Engineering experience.
Preferred Additional Skills:
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) with 9 years of experience, Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) with 7 years of experience, or PhD with 4 years of experience required
Strong Skills in the use of Finite Element Analysis tools such as Ansys (Preferred) and Abaqus
Familiarity with the design and analysis of Filament wound pressure vessels
Understanding of the function and design of solid rocket motors
Hands on experience with the manufacturing of solid rocket motors
Scripting and coding using Ansys APDL or Python
Ability to parse large amounts of data for analysis
