Summary About the Position: Serves as a Federal Wage System Supervisor at a facility within the Inland Marine Transportation System (IMTS). The Lock and Dam Equipment Mechanic Supervisor prescribes methods, procedures, priorities, and time requirements; assigns specific tasks for day-to-day or project-by-project accomplishment; and oversees employees day-to-day direction of well-established rotational shift oriented routine equipment and facilities maintenance and lock and dam operations. Responsibilities Serves as a Federal Wage System working supervisor at a large lock or lock and dam facility located within the IMTS. First line supervisory responsibility over a staff of lock and dam equipment mechanics, electricians, full time, seasonal, and/or on call lock and dam operators, occasionally one or more temporary lock and dam operator or laborer. Plan the use of workers, equipment, facilities, materials and tools on a day-to-day, project-by-project, or on an occasionally longer basis. As a working supervisor, assigns work to individual employees involved in the performance of a variety of maintenance activities required to maintain lock and dam equipment, buildings, grounds and equipment. Support, implement and explain management programs such as incentive awards, cost reduction, affirmative action, time and leave, overtime and others to subordinates. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) LOCK AND DAM EQUIPMENT MECHANIC SUPERVISOR without more than normal supervision. At a minimum, perform the most difficult and complex tasks at a large Lock or Lock and Dam facility located within the IMTS, exercising first line supervisory responsibility over a staff of Lock and Dam Equipment Mechanics and/or Electricians, full time, seasonal, and/or on-call Lock and Dam Operators, and occasionally, on a seasonal basis, one or more temporary Lock and Dam Operators or Laborers; work supervised and performed includes maintenance work required for the upkeep of lock, dam, and other site buildings, grounds, and equipment; distribute and balance the daily workload of Lock and Dam Equipment Mechanics and Lock and Dam Operators; kept up with progress of work and make adjustments in accordance with established priorities; spot-checked and/or reviewed completed work to guarantee satisfactory results. – Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Lead or Supervise Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires frequent standing, stooping, stretching, climbing and crouching. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. May occasionally lift and carry items weighing over 50 pounds. Uses coordination of eyes, hands and feet, and also of legs and body in installing, repairing, or testing equipment in confined areas such as manholes, enclosed switchgear structures, or on overhead structures. Climbs ladders and poles. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside and outside, subject to changing climatic conditions, loud noises, prolonged standing, falling, water hazards, drowning, cuts and bruises. Works in cramped places and is exposed to dirt, grease, fumes, and dust; works around heavy construction machinery, with and around power shop equipment. Occasionally will work behind bulkheads or in tunnels below water level. Wear protective gear as required. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation. Direct deposit of pay is required.
