Research Assistant I

### Position Summary

Assists in coordinating research for the Nematology lab and field research program in order to meet research goals.  Activities include planning and designing experiments; conducting experiments; entering, managing, compiling, and analyzing data; graph creation; assisting with preparation of reports and presentations; assisting with grant proposal preparation and submission; communicating with funding sources and growers; supervising and training student workers; assisting with ordering supplies for the field and laboratory work. Some activities will require working under mildly difficult conditions and overnight travel. Works hours are typically 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. but variable. 

Position is funded for 1 year from the date of hire with possible extension based on availability of funding.

### Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in entomology, nematology, agriculture, or related field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in an area related to research being performed including field research; may require software specific to the area of research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position may require special licensing or certification in the field related to the area of employment.

### Desired Qualifications

B.S. degree in entomology, nematology, agriculture, or related field; ability and willingness to work independently; ability to perform meticulous and tedious tasks accurately and follow detailed procedures; familiarity with data analysis methods; strong oral and written communication skills; interest and willingness to train and supervise students; at least six months of field work and data collection experience in lab or field trials; familiarity with nematology field and lab methods; familiarity with data entry and organization using excel software; experience with statistical analysis and graph creation; ability to identify nematodes commonly found in Michigan or experience that shows capacity to learn; ability to use microscopes and experience in nematode extraction methods; ability to communicate with growers and funding agencies; experience with supervising students; experience with preparation of reports, presentations and manuscripts.
