Job Summary
The Supervisor, Attendance Management – United States is responsible for supervising the 24/7 operation of CN’s Attendance Management Center (AMC), including leading the Administrator – Attendance Management positions. The role involves training, coaching, mentoring, and overseeing daily operations, as well as resolving attendance-related issues and ensuring compliance with CN’s Attendance Guidelines. The incumbent develops new processes and reporting methods, handles escalated issues, and oversees employee leave requests in line with federal and state laws. Furthermore, the role supports field managers with attendance tracking and coaching materials, interact with Human Resources (HR), Labor Relations (LR) and legal teams on complex cases, and ensure all documentation meets legal requirements.
Main Responsibilities
Operational Supervision and Management – 34%
· Supervise and create the work schedules of the 24/7 operation of CN’s Attendance Management Center (AMC)
· Supervise the AMC Administrator positions, including training, coaching, mentoring, scheduling, issue resolution, and performance management
· Provide back up and vacation coverage for AMC positions
· Handle escalated attendance management issues and other issues from the Leave Administrators and the AMC
· Represent CN in discipline hearings related to violations of CN’s Attendance Guidelines
Policy Development and Compliance – 33%
· Assist in the continued development of CN’s Attendance Management Guidelines and corrective actions
· Oversee the intake for employees requesting leave for sickness, Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave, or other non-contractual absences
· Oversee the analysis and administration of leave requests in compliance with federal and state law and with CN’s Attendance Guidelines
· Ensure all documentation and correspondence meets Legal and HR requirements
· Handle integration of single-day absences into existing Medical Leave and On-Duty Injury processes and policies
· Recognize and oversee any Americans with Disabilities (ADA) accommodation needs that may arise from leave administration according to CN processes
Reporting, Communication, and Support – 33%
· Define and develop new processes and scripting for the AMC
· Define and provide quality reporting on attendance management to all levels of the organization
· Track attendance guideline compliance and support field managers by developing documents and support materials for coaching and counseling or disciplinary actions
· Interact with Operations supervisors and managers regarding employee leaves and attendance ensuring education and coaching on the law and CN rules and processes
· Interact with HR and Labor Relations (LR) colleagues as well as CN legal counsel on questionable or escalated cases
· Obtain complete and often sensitive or private information from employees for determining leave eligibility
· Analyze varied information regarding HR, leave, and other employment law to make decisions and recommendations on complex cases
· Develop rapport with employees and explain leave decisions, federal leave laws, and CN’s Attendance Guidelines in an effective manner
Working Conditions
The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role requires occasional evenings, overnight, holiday, and weekend work. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and stress in a fast-paced work environment dealing with confidential material.
Requirements
Experience
Supervisor
· Between 2 to 5 years of experience in a supervisory role
o Experience working in a union environment
o Experience handling sensitive and confidential matters
o Previous experience working for Transportation or Rail industry or a similar 24/7 Operation
o Experience maintaining and improving processes
o Minimum 2 years of experience in HR or leave administration
Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset
Education/Certification/Designation
· High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)
· Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or related field

Technical Skills/Knowledge
· Working knowledge of the federal and state family leave laws, as well as other statutory leaves in the United States (U.S.)
· Working knowledge of HR employment law, including as it relates to leaves, disability and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
· Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel), Qcera/Itimebank Software or other Leave Administration Software, Crew Assignment and Tracking System (CATS), or similar time keeping Human Resources Information System (HRIS)
· Knowledge of SharePoint
